New Zealand Mossie Build [update Mar 12]

Postby Mayfly » Thu Dec 24, 2009 5:58 am

Last week DT & I were lucky enough to look around the work shop of a Mosquito build. New Zealand has not one but two Mosquito builds happening a present.
All the ‘wood’ work is done by a guy called Glyn Powell who started to build the moulds 18+ years ago simply because he could. He has help from one full time employee & a couple of part time workers.
He said he had no formal training but has learnt as he has gone along. All the materials used are as the original apart from the glue which is apoxy resin. The wood used is pine 3ply which is especially made to order and the moulds were made from original blue print drawings.
In total to build the ‘shell’ takes approximately 3 -4 years, another one he built went to a company in NZ called Av Specs. This is the one which hopefully will be ready to fly in about 2 years time.

UPDATE:

On the last day we back to Avspec the company completing the mossie - I withdrew 2 pics from the first post because although we had permission to view the build & take pics I hadn't asked permission from the company to post them in the internet so thought it best to delete them. However when we went back I was granted permission so here you go...

Sorry D4th they are going to use RR engines - they said Packards are too scarce - so if you know of any I'm sure they will be interested.

Are they also building one in Canada Gully? because this one is going to be in Candaian colours but I can't remember which a/c. it is hoped they will be ready for first public flight around Easter next year.

I think there are still two major stashes of
Packard Merlins, one in Canada and the other
in Nevada or California. Both are closely guarded
by their owners and meted-out, mostly for P-51s
and Racers.....

The ones for Mosquitos were unique, I believe,
and counter-rotated, so a different engine on
each wing.

To clarify, the pics in the first post are of a second fuselage, Glyn is building this one for himself & is hoping to fly it to Hobart.

The last few pics are his first build which now belongs to an American guy & the 'metal work' is being completed by an aviation company called Av spec they are also building a Rapide & a ermmm I can't remember, but its an updated Kitty Hawk I think - [apologies for crap memory]

The Canadian Mossie re-build is taking place at Victoria Air Maintenance, North Saanich, British Columbia. It's serial is CF-HML. Wings and fuselage are together and systems fit out is underway. Have a look here: http://vicair.net/projects/mosquito/nov-2009

Can't wait - we might have a swarm of Mossies in a few years! :D :D
