"Snapper" from Wellesbourne intro

Postby Snapper » Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:54 pm

Hi all.
Just registered today and have been encouraged to give a brief intro.... I am NOT very clued up on aircraft but am on a steep learning curve so anything I say is always open to constructive comment and correction.

I was born at an early age in West Lancashire and can still recall the roar of Meteor jets flying over our house from their base at Woodvale on the Formby coast when I was child - then NOTHING, no interest (except I do recall seeing a Vulcan with Lightning escorts flying low level over the North Circular Road in London in 75/76!) .... Until, while living in the beautiful village of Thaxted in Essex in the late 90's, I was encouraged to visit Mildenhall for one of their amazing air shows. WOW! That ignited a fresh spark of interest when seeing the mythical stealth bomber..... and the even more weird stealth fighters.

So moving on.... I've been working in Wellesbourne for about 10 years now and I was often dragged, kicking and screaming, by my work colleagues to go to the Wellesbourne airfield 'Touchdown' Cafe and force fed on one of their superb tasty large breakfasts.... In getting there we passed XM655 hidden away in the corner of the airfield and I often thought I must go and investigate.... This curiosity co-incided with the 2005 Wings & Wheels event and I really enjoyed the event.... very lo-key and with classic cars to view as well I enjoyed the experience. I took a few photos and thought nothing else about it. A couple of years later I went again and by this time I'd started posting my photos on a fotopic website in order to share them with others..... These were seen by Charles Brimson of XM655 MaPS who asked if he could use a couple in the next XM655 newsletter..... Well it just snowballed after that and now I've been appointed - "Official" - XM655 photographer..... and I maintain the XM655 photo website.

In this intro I just want to pay credit to the crew of XM655 who have been the friendliest team of volunteer professionals - very knowledgable, capable and helpful guys it has been my privilege to get to know. Well done to them for the miracles they continue to perform with XM655.

However - my first passion remains with steam locos (Ducks for cover) - so if you want to checkout the 10,000+ photos on my main website then follow this link....

PS - I DO NOT wear an anorak.

Welcome Clive

I bet there are a few ANORAKs hanging up in your hall though!

Welcome - I too have been through the steam era and cannot resist a large steam Loco or a working Beam Engine - they are living breathing monsters and very easy to like ...I know :D

Looking forward to some of your pics appearing here on Iconic :p ;)

Hello Clive (Snapper) and welcome. A special welcome also to a fellow Steam Locomotive Enthusiast! As Mayfly mentioned - check out the 'History Past and Present' section. I think you will fine it very interesting. (I will definetly be checking out your website!).
