Ron Bennett RIP [Southern Locomotives Ltd]

Postby 34053 » Fri Feb 28, 2020 1:03 pm

We were saddened to learn that our 'Master Painter', Ron Bennett had died, at the age of 93.

Ron continued to attend Herston Works, albeit for 2 days a week latterly. He had such high standards. I remember at the Recommissioning Ceremony for 340453 'Sir Keith Park' (on 31st August 2013, at Kidderminster Station) overhearing him say that he 'only had time to apply 5 coats of gloss, instead of my usual 7' due to the time scale for delivery of the Locomotive from Swanage to the Severn Valley Railway.

He was a true 'gentleman' with a great sense of humour and enjoyed the usual 'banter' at the Works.

He will be sorely missed and Herston Works will not be the same again without him.

Rest in Peace dear friend.
