Ok the exciting bit colour going on
All lined up ready to get sprayed they have sat on the radiator for a good few days so the primer is well cooked

The front spectacle plate finished

Rear spectacle plate. Parts all over the workshop to dry

Boiler jacket looks lovely and shiny

Removable roof panel sitting on top of one of the side tanks I am paint stripping at the moment

The boiler jacket vs the old colour side tank the old paint is just a shade darker almost brown

I was worried about the amount of paint I had but I shouldn't have I have done three coats on all the parts except the side tanks and I only used 1/3 of the tin.
The next thing is a layer of acrylic lacquer to top off and protect the new paint but I think I will allow the paint to dry for a good while before I spray that. The side tanks have loads of detail and are going to be quite a challenge to both strip prep and paint all good fun tho

Thank you, Dougs. A lovely paint job, I must say. Really 'shiny, shiny'. Very time consuming, but really worthwhile.

A bit more on the paint job plus the the lube pump fault
The smoke box stripped and in primer

The first of the side tanks in primer I can see a lot of bits that need filler so it will have to get primer again later

This is the side that needs a touch up as it will need to be perfic for the top coat, as it's all flat any dings will stick out like a bulldogs dangly bits

Ok on to the lube pump the problem is the one way ratchet it's going both ways so not pumping
This is the ratchet the pawl on the left is badly worn so when the pump is under high load it slips

You can just about see the damage in this photo it should be a shape edge

The reason for the damage is too thick oil steam oil should be thick but the stuff I got with the engine is 40 years old and it's gone a bit thick this put a massive load on the pump and shredded the ratchet
The photo shows the inside of the pump it's a two cylinder oscillating pump

Ok I have been quiet for awhile but progress is ongoing it's all a bit samey at the moment strip clean fill and spray
I am still wrestling with the lubricator and I am now making a new part that will hopefully fix it for good, the little claw that has worn away I am remaking out of high carbon steel so it will last, the down side is it takes allot to machine hope fully I can complete this tomorrow and get back to painting

A experiment to protect the middle axle from ash this will wear the bearings very badly if not mitigated if this works I will make something more robust

Thank you, Dougs. Thank goodness for central heating radiators Great for paint drying! That's a good idea for protecting the middle axle from ash. A small detail, but most important.

A very quick update
The new part was machined

The new shape differs from the old one quite a bit and took some filing to get the correct profile and took out two drill bits as it's very hard material

Well I can report it's working I am not totally happy with it as it seems to be right on the edge so I think it will give me more trouble once it's worn in a bit their does not seem to be much room for error with this pump.

Bit of a question for you guys about smoke boxes on locomotives I have noticed pretty much all the loco's I have seen have a matt finish on the smoke box is this normal? I am thinking to paint Butch with an authentic paint job so this would be a non shiny smoke box.

Re smokebox finish. I believe all locos came out of the works with gloss painted smokeboxes, but as it is unlagged, the first few steamings would start to turm the paint matt. If that is the case, paint it gloss and let the heat do the rest.

thanks RLN I will give it a very light coat of gloss on top then hopefully that will dim off a bit once used the old paint didnt turn at all but it was vey thick gloss.

Just had a thought. Paints were different in the old days, and a modern paint may not weather like the old ones. You could always paint with a matt black barbecue paint, or if you go down the gloss route, make sure that it isn't heat resistant i.e. no graphite etc. in it. Just hedging my bets in case I'm spouting nonsense - wouldn't be the first time

Gloss without doubt, Dougs. (You could see your face on the Smokebox Door of 'Sir Keith Park' when she left the Works, in Swanage, for 'The Severn Valley Railway' in May 2012).

Home stretch news
I am nearing completion of the respray and the lubricator is fixed working and thoroughly tested
Things are starting to go back together now
The boiler complete with new insulation jacket

I have a slight hitch in that after speaking to a paint sprayer about a dimpled finish I got with the lacquer that I had oil in the air lines this is not a major issue for the respray tho as I will just have to leave the paint to cure and re lacquer later prob next year however I have now got a big clean down job on my air system to do. The last bits are the two side tanks which I now have new transfers for. And then it's back working again my new pressure gauge came this week too so I will be fitting that once it has been calibrated.

no SWMBO would never stand for it I had to decamp to the conservatory as it was way too cold in the workshop.
On Sunday I nipped down to the club to hand over my new pressure gauge to get it calibrated the Xmas run was in full swing never seen it soo busy with massive ques for train rides

I was a bit envious that my loco was not running but maybe next time.
Anyway back to the respray
The windows are back in with new glass

And the last of the colour has been sprayed on the side tanks without doubt the best so far, very flat I am very happy with the result as it's the most visible part.


Just have the LMS letters to go on then spray the cab black then spray the lacquer then all done

A lovely paint job, Dougs. You can be really proud of that. BTW, how do you manage to cut such small diameter pieces of glass for the Cab windows?

cut them to rough size then chip/nibble away with sharp nail removing pliers (not mafia equipment before anyone has a pop!) its super thin glass about 0.5mm thick and it nearly always chips inline with the blades of the cutters so steady as she goes and its really quite easy, only scrapped one from four windows.

And the new cab hand rail detail is finished

So I only have the lacquer to spray and it's going back together

thanks VB dont think I could could do it justice I am far from happy with the result on mine but its definately an improvement and hopefully can be refinished to a glass like finish once the lacqor has cured (its currently covered in dimples)

yes PW i am quite happy its much better even at this stage it looks great once cured though ishould be able to "flat it" with very fine wet and dry and polish it up alot.
I thought I would add a pic of the progress kinda says it all and why i had to repaint it as the old stuff wat just falling off all the time
