Red Arrows Statement

Postby Thumper » Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:10 pm

The Red Arrows have released a statement about why the display at Silverstone for the BTCC was cancelled.

Reading between the lines and jargon I am presuming this is something to do with local aircraft and/or possibly the pleasure flights that were running at the event not obeying to the rules or keeping the airspace clear for the Reds?

Can someone explain it to me in simples language please? :D

Exactly that Thumps. All displays have a zone both height & distance that supposedly restricts all a/c other than those displaying from that area. In the case of Silverstone that airspace was infringed by other a/c. By what or whom I don't know. [Tho' there can exceptions I think if previously agreed].

It happens to the Reds [and other aircraft quite often] and has in the past be the cause of some serious penalties to the offending aircrew. It is a legal requirement of all pilots to read and comply.

The 6nm that he is talking about is measured from the display datum - the centre of the display line. At the speeds the Reds fly at it will only take around 70 -90 seconds for them to cover that distance - so although it sounds a long way it really isn't.

I read this last week. I was suprised as I was not aware of the airspace restrictions being quite so strict etc, as I saw the Reds display in Lymington last year with FlyBe aircraft going over every 2-3 mins (They had to do the flat/rolling display as Southampton Air traffic didn't want them to interfer with their arrivals).

Cool thanks a lot Mayfly!

Would the pilots/operating companies that disobeyed the rules and regs be punished?

At Bletchley Park earlier this year I was waiting for the Reds to come over and they had to be held as a glider pilot was pissing around like an idiot right over Bletchley Park. Had the Reds come in he would have been toast and there could have been a major accident with loss of life L-) What is wrong with these idiots ~x(

Oh yes - there was a serious infringement 3 -4 years ago, I think that season was particulary bad & they had over 60 infringements

I'm not sure if one pilot didn't end up with a jail term.... [memory playing up] :(

A local event to me was visited the other day. A friend of a rather large party, has his own heleicopter. He decided to visit the party in his craft, he put on "pleasure" flights for the guests. A number of the local residents complained, our helicopter was sent to investigate and video the event. CAA have been informed.

Not wishing to steal anyone's thunder, but isn't this the incident Cluny was talking about here?

Whenever friends have diverted in service helicopters to call in at Mum and Dads, the local Constabulary are notified and an assessment made. BUT NO hops are repeatedly carried out because it WILL PISS OFF the locals!! ;)
