Some old photos from Romanian Air Force(RoAF)

Postby Dagger_id » Sun Apr 17, 2011 8:38 am

I have a few old photos from a friend of mine and i wanna show it to you. They was made in the 60's-70's or so when his father work in the RoAF as a fighter pilot. He flew back then with soviet military jet planes:MiG-15,15UTI,17,19,21F-13,IL-28 and so.In those times many romanian pilots goes for training in the USSR.What was quite interesting is that of an unofficial version about the death of Iuri Gagarin.Everybody knows that he died because he was crashed with a MiG-15UTI version in a training flight. But my friend told me that the official version was not true. His father, who was at the training flights in USSR in that times told him another version, the unofficial one.He was informed by some soviet colleagues that the Iuri was lost in space, unofficial of course. The soviets would not admit such a failure. So,it was handy to tell a version who was accepted by everyone without much questioning. The first two pictures was made somewhere at the Black Sea in a MiG-15UTI training version.

Based on the photo, I'd say that's a two-seater.....

For those of you who like a good read, there's this:

What year might this have been, Dagger????????????

And let's not forget that the MiG 15 put the Fear
of GOD into the USAF and the RAF in Korea, leading
directly to the F-104 Starfighter and the EE Lightning
and others!

If the Soviets hadn't been such resourceful opponents,
we might not have had some of OUR finest aircraft!

You're right!I always think that the military jet aviation of those days was the "creme du la creme".The 50's and the 60's are the great years in jet aviation. It will never be the same! :(

Now i will show you an MiG-15UTI,in fact was made under license in the former Republic of Czechoslovakia and was widespread in all the countries of the Warsaw Pact and many others. This version was named CS-103 and is similar with the UTI soviet version but with a better finish.Yes,it's true! The czechoslovakians versions were finished better.First is a photo with CS-103 "2579" in her good old days. The second it will show the same "2579" in the Museum of Aviation in Bucharest. The picture was made last year in april.I was there in a visit before the local authorities crowd the outside collection in a corner. :(

...and how she look today!

Very Nice!

It does look, though, as if they might
have been a little prone to scraping
their tails on takeoff!!!!!

Danf.

PS: I see on your profile you are a fan
of Convair aircraft.....

How did That happen and which ones?

Me, too, just not all of them........

I am a big fan of B-58 Hustler.I like this supersonic bomber. It looks good and was an extraordinary aircraft for its time.A great flying machine. So sad that his career was so short. :(

This isn't anything we usually get to see, and
I love having the chance to view them!

Thank You Dagger!

I think we sometimes don't give credit to those
in the SSRs who built capable aircraft!

They did it because we did it and vice-versa......

I'm glad you like them. These photos was made generally by the pilots who flew them.L-29 Delfin was a great aerobatic aircraft and was produced in large numbers in former Czechoslovakia.L-29 Acrobat was a one-seater version. Was replaced later by the newest L-39 Albatros.
