How long after this were they put out of service?
You know, there's an element of sadness in these photographs, too.....
Thank you, Ian.....
Danf.
This was very much the curtain call Danf.
EDIT: Correction from the horse's mouth ( Andy B at the LPG); Not all had gone by May 88, the last 7 hung around for delivery flights until the end of June, our 728 on 24th June, and the 6 for Cranfield, 452,458,328,898,899,923. 923 and 898 were the last two to leave on 30th June 88 Plus most of the scrappers were around well into late 88
693 was a long term resident of Warton prior to the foxhunter radar trials, she wasnt based at Binbrook, and was joined by 773, [not XE775] after she had been flown into storage at Boscombe in June 88, she went to Warton as a replacement for 724 in July 89. 904 left Binbrook for Warton in April 88 928 left Binbrook in June 88, her last flight was Sept 99, spares recovered then onto the gate.
Thanks Andy, it just goes to show you can't always believe what you read on t'internet.
I do have more photos from Binbrook, somewhere. I will find them eventually ...
I saw my first Lightning take off in 1962 from RAF Leconfield and my last was at RAF Binbrook in May 1988.
I consider myself to be very lucky to have witnessed the greatest Fast Jet that the UK has ever produced..
