Anatoly Kvotchur Test Pilot

Postby MOD » Sat Jan 12, 2013 12:13 am

Probably the best fast jet pilot I ever saw.

I was lucky to meet Anatoly on a couple of occasions. He perfected the Snake Bite (or Cobra) manoeuvre and stunned audiences with his square loops and skid turns.

The Su-27 was a surprisingly large aircraft being 9' longer, 8000lbs heavier and with a 6' greater wingspan than the F-15.

I first met him at Yeovilton

I then saw him at Finningley in 94. He arrived from Moscow just before his slot ,without support ,and after his display he then flew back to Moscow.

This is Anatoly's incredible escape at the Paris Salon in '89 when his Mig-29 suffered a low level bird-strike.

He is now Deputy Chief of the Gromov Flight Research Institute.

Thank you for posting that, Ian.....

IMO, far too many Great Russian Pilots
have been sacrificed to their careless,
reverse-engineered development program X(

It makes my blood boil that they are so
casual about the men who fly their aircraft
and DIE, yet seem to think this is "Okay".....

Your country and my country do NOT do
things the way the Russians do.....

Thank God!

Danf.
I like to do my planning retroactively!

Danf I found this website: The first section is quite interesting.

http://englishrussia.com/2010/02/14/rus ... t-russian/

The Russkies did make some superbly powerful jet engines though... Probably thanks to Clement Attlee (a misguided Labour Prime Minister) who, much to Stalin's astonishment, allowed our state of the art RR jet propulsion technology to be handed to the Soviet Union on a plate just after WWII.

From wiki ..
"In an early "good-will" gesture that was later heavily criticised, the Attlee government allowed the Soviets access, under the terms of a 1946 UK-USSR Trade Agreement, to several Rolls-Royce Nene jet engines. The Soviets, who at the time were well behind the West in jet technology, reverse-engineered the Nene, and installed their own version in the MiG-15 interceptor, used to good effect against US-UK forces in the subsequent Korean War, as well as in several later MiG models." As can be assumed the Americans were NOT happy.

I do have to say that I think the latest Sukhoi family of jets are impressive to say the least.

I have just come across this site as well. I remember this incident very clearly and how the western press, at the time, seemed to snigger at the Valve-based technology.
