I thought I`d share some interesting pictures I`ve come across, I`ve got loads that I`ve just picked up after browsing t`internetweb.

Wow....there must have been some weight in those B36 tracks...?

The weight of the B-36 was one of the reasons they tried the tracks.
There were only a few airfields in the world that could take the weight as it was transmitted through the existing undercarriage, the tracks were designed to spread the weight.

An interesting slice of aviation history.

The D-21 mach3 drone was created in the early 1960s. It was mounted on the M-21 launch aircraft which was derived from the A-12, first flight of the drone was in 1964.



After a fatal accident shown in this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMyC2urCl_4 the drone was adapted to be launched from a B-52



It was used operationally 4 times for flights over China. The project was cancelled in 1971

C-130 super C.O.D.
In 1963 the US Navy tried using the C-130 on an aircraft carrier.
A US Marines KC-130F was borrowed and after some small modifications was operated of the USS Forrestal. Altogether, the crew successfully negotiated 29 touch-and-go landings, 21 unarrested full-stop landings, and 21 unassisted takeoffs at gross weights of 85,000 pounds up to 121,000 pounds.
Although the tests were successful the US Navy decided it was too risky to use the C-130 in this way.

Very impressive flying skills, you can see the special centre line they painted down the deck and he lands bang on that line. And the sea looks a little rough
I think there was only 15 feet from the wingtip to the island`s structure when using that line.
