Red Kites around Stokenchurch 26-4-11

Postby Sickbag_andy » Thu Apr 28, 2011 6:02 pm

I went to the Stokenchurch area on Tuesday and spent a day in the countryside and then at Chris’s Café in Studeley Green watching Red Kites. I heard they were abundant but wasn’t really prepared for what I was going to witness. Driving along the M40 I counted 19 by the time I pulled off into Stokenchurch and then on the edge of Cowleaze wood I saw 7 together – thought that was good! Then I drove down to the café for breakfast to find out what time they feed them (c. 2pm FYI) and I then went off to Aston Rowan nature reserve and walked a bit of the footpath along Beacon Hill but strangely only saw 2 there so I went back to Stokenchurch where I saw one flying down a residential road at rooftop height ( a bit like that cruise missile in Baghdad) before heading to Ibstone and Cadmore end – lovely countryside and a few more kites Next to Water End and Beacons Bottom near Studeley Green where there were kites everywhere and I parked in the Studeley Green community centre car park for an hour watching and photographing them quite close by and right overhead (plus a single buzzard), I counted 26 in the sky at one point . I then headed back to the café and spent 2 hours watching them feed, I got a few decent photos of them flying down for food but they were so quick once they dived it was hard to follow them with the camera. This was where the sheer number of them amazed me – at one point I counted 46 above me and there were almost certainly more than that just riding the breeze and waiting for one to start the feed , once one came down others would follow then they would go back to gliding above me for a while.

Anyway out of the many pics I took these are some of the better ones:

Firstly some airborne shots , there were so many in the air at times I was able to capture pics with two or more in them (I got one pic in which I counted 26! )

Then I got these closer ones as they came down for the food

Nice shots, I used to reckon on seeing in excess of 100 between Wittering and Benson on an early monday morning drive to work! :ymapplause:

Andy, where is the Café that feeds the Kites?

It's Chris's Cafe at Studeley Green on the main road to high Wycombe, as you go through Studeley Green from Stokenchurch it is on the left as you leave the village

I wish i was that lucky- they are quite sparse in Essex, I've only ever seen 3 around here, we get them reported in the wildlife secion of the village magazine about once every 2 months on average. We have plenty of buzzards instead though - I watched 3 together about 2 weeks ago right overhead my house and often see singles or twos above the village.
