Red Kites around Stokenchurch 29-3-13

Postby Sickbag_andy » Sun Mar 31, 2013 9:14 am

I spent a couple of hours with my brother in the Stokenchurch area on Friday watching the red kites of which there seem to be more and more every time I visit the area, these were taken at Studeley. They also seem to be spreading further afield quite rapidly now, we went to Windsor afterwards (segwayying at Bray lakes) and saw a couple there and around the M25 as far as Rickmansworth, we get a few reported in Essex as well. Sadly we saw one on the M40 that won’t be going anywhere as in it’s search for road kills it had succumbed itself. Unfortunately the cloud got more intense as the morning went on so some were against a white background which I don’t think looks as nice…..

If you go to the chilterns they are everywhere, best place is Stokenchurch and if you go the Studeley between stokenchurch and High Wycombe (where I took these) they freed them every afternoon at Chris's cafe (except bank hoildays when I went), they are quite used to people so you can get farily close to them. They are spreading out quite a lot now - have a look a the bird forums for your area, they may be reported on there although in places where they are very common they probably dont get reported nowadays, this is one site but there are many others:
