Is there any interest in a monthly photo comp on IA. Unfortunately there wouldn't be a prizes just the Kudos of winning. It wouldn't necessarily be just an a/c related comp but covering all situations or whatever you want really.

It's something I've been pondering over for a while would appreciate thoughts.

I think it is an excellent idea. Although I would obviously only spectate :))

Judging is easy. The photo's are up for a week and members can click on the one they like, a bit like they do on Canon Fodder Forums.

Civilian aviation just ask their members to e-mail their 1,2 3 to to coordinator. they run 2 -a photo of the month (i.e. must be taken in the current month) and then a specialist subject for photos taken at any time. I have seen theCanon fodder comp (and voted in it) not sure how they get down to their shortlist but that must be a manual choice before the poll is set up ( similar to how I did the VTTS photo comp over last 2 years)

There are various ways of doing it but wanted to see if enough members were interested.

Personally I would go for a monthly comp so members don't get bored with it and that also gives time to see what shots could be captured if you haven't any in your album.
My thoughts were to encourage photography and also give those who don't have great cameras the ability to take part - something like the most 'unusal car' or 'rare caterpillar' or 'interesting prop blur', so not everything is not focused on the perfectly composed or exposed photos.

It's your comp you decide - I'm just happy to kick the ball off.

And Photoshopping shouldn't be allowed, or any other cheating software.

A good idea but a little sharpening/cropping could be allowed but no obvious image manipulation much like the BBC Countryfile do it !

Sounds like a really fun idea to me :ymapplause:

And I second the no photoshopping thing.
Not that I know how to use it anyway :)) or indeed own any software =)) =))

Well now this depends on what you call photoshopping - RAW photos are not processed in camera as jpgs are so therefore need to be run through a PS programme otherwise you can't upload.

I agree there should be no cutting out of subjects and placed within a different background but sharpening and cropping is not cheating it was what was done in the old fashioned dark room by home developists [my new word of the day] :))

But this is why I said some 'odd ball' categories should be included so not all photos are judged by quality but by interest and rarity.

Ok I think we should give this a go for say a 3 month trial starting from the 1st October.

My proposed rules......

1 A one month competition running from the 1st to the end of the month. No entries after midnight on the last day of competition. ( any entered after this time will be removed)
2. All photos must be your own work.
3. You may crop and sharpen and generally edit your photos but no cutting and pasting, what is in the photo must have been in the original view (unless the is a specific competition for arty effects).
4. Competitions may or may not be aviation specific.
5. You may post up to 3 photos but all in the same post.
6. IA members may vote at the end of the competition for 1 entry only - in the event of a tie the moderators or appointed competition overseer's decision is final.
7. No commenting on any photos until voting then you may if you wish, say why you have voted the way you have.
8. NO O/T banter all O/T posts will be removed.
9. Rules may be amended.

Any glaring errors or omissions please point out.

As I said before to level the playing field and take into account different equipment it's NOT the quality of photo that matters most but interesting subjects, unusual angles and compositions.
[Jiggy take note!!] :p

I still want the thread to fun in usual IA way but to keep it focused I feel we need the above rules.

Yes, I'm up for it.

Any rules on when taken?

I think that could come under whatever the monthly comp is - eg: Jet a/c taken this year or wildlife taken any time, as long as the topic isn't too restrictive.

Hope the competition goes well. I will look to see what is posted, but may not enter any, as mine probably won't be any good for a competition. Sorry if that is not what you wanted to hear.

Minty - I sorry to be blunt - I agree with MOD that's rubbish, you do yourself down far too much!!

Who was it that said The Chainbridge Forge wants to use his photos for Christmas Cards? :-?

As I've said before this is not about the best focused or perfectly exposed shot - It's about a whole lot more than that.

SO! - lots of you werte up for this idea when it was suggested and Oli has taken the time to run the comps so why are there not more entries?

He's tried to make the comps suitable for all grades of equipment so that shouldn't be an excuse, he deserves your supports, so come on - make next month's a bumper comp please if he agrees to give it another go [-x
