Former RAF Finmere [Pic Heavy] UPDATED 18.11.12

Postby Cluny » Mon Jan 03, 2011 5:48 pm

Had a little walk around what remains [and publicly accessable] of RAF Finmere this morning with my camera as I needed to get out of the house .

History .
Opened in August 1942 as a satalite airfield for Bicester based 13 OTU Blenheims .
January 1943 brought recently formed [24th December 1943 at Bicester] 307 FTU [Ferry Training Unit] Whitleys and Wellingtons but by the end of March they had converted to Boston IIIs [the first (AL697) arrived on the 20th] .
307 FTU left in October 43 for Melton Mowbray . 13 OTU started to recieve Mosquitos and Mitchells in January 44 and the remaining Blenheims were withdrawn .
In june 45 , 6 x Tempest IIs arrived at Finmere to replace Bicesters Hurricanes in the Fighter affiliation role of 13 OTU .
13 OTU left Finmere at the end of July 45 taking 44 x Mosquitos , 6 x Ansons , 5 x Mitchells and the Tempests to Middleton St George and Finmere closed .

Those old remains in the wood look really eerie, rather you than me :D

I always find these sites a bit sad :(
But facinating at the same time.

Good work Agent "C", next time take your aerial camera and get some air to ground shots! ;) :ymapplause:

TSR-2 simply got the first 3 right. ”

It is indeed a bit 'Blair Witch' in places :))
I know what you mean , a lot of these buildings [especially the big building in the Instructional site with the big crack running up it , wasn't like that the last time I visited last year] wont be here for much longer as the site is earmarked to be a storage site when they build HS2 through the area :(
