Try these Dan L-749 XA-MEW TIJ 1058

Made a bit of a miss calculation on the painting size, not sure how I managed to do that but it's actually 23" x 20" a little bigger than first stated, hope that doesn't make too much of a difference Dan :)

Dave, having now painted a Connie I think it very likely I will do another at some point in the future, it's such a gorgeous aircraft.

Cheers,

Terry

I don't mind about the larger size as
long as it isn't truly HUGE ;)

If I am not the one who buys it, I know
two people who certainly will :D

And the Constellation IS a stunner,
isn't she?

No time to PM at the moment, but I
will very soon...

XA-MEW was operated by the airline in the
50s/early 60s then scrapped in Miami at some
point....

Her identical twin sister, XA-MEV, crashed in
Guadalajara in June 1958, killing all 45 souls
aboard....

I'm working on getting the aircraft's entire
history which might be of interest to you, Terry :)

Wow! I'm impressed Dan. So glad I didn't paint the twin!
It's a great shame that so many fantastic aircraft throughout history have been scrapped , what a sad end for such an elegant lady. There are a lot of soulless people around :( Despite that It would be great if you could get the full history :)

I have just queried Ralph Pettersen, aka
Round_Engine, about the history.....

If he isn't off travelling somewhere, I'll
be hearing back soon :D

Danf.

As Of Today::::::::::

Ralph IS away, but he i-Phoned me he'll
send the info on Sunday........

PanAm owned 40% of Aeronaves, so I
suspect it's ex-Pan American.....

Also, XA-MEV's pilots were faulted in
the investigation for not following the
established climbout procedure for
Guadalajara which is ringed by large
mountains.

BAM! Right into the side of one :((

Got an early answer from Ralph, so
here's the info::::::::::::::

Lockheed S/N is 749A-79-44, E13768....

Delivered to Air India October 1949 as VT-DAR
"Maratha Princess"....

Flew the inaugural Air India service between
Bombay and Tokyo in May of 1955....

Traded in early 1958 to Lockheed for new Super
Constellations and sold to Aeronaves De Mexico
as XA-MEW (c/n 2619) "Acapulco".....

In service with Aeronaves until December 1959....

Changed hands many times and was at some point
converted to a cargo aircraft by (get this!) grafting
on the tail section of one of the ex-navy turboprop
Constellations, including the cargo door!!!!

Followed a downward spiral until it was IMPOUNDED
for drug smuggling in Montevideo, Uruguay in April
1967.

Sat there intact until January 1982 when it was sold
for scrap and was broken-up one month later :((

Terry, your Connie has quite a history :D

I've learned a lot from searching
for CARS ;)

But Ralph gets a lot of credit, too :ymapplause:

I also suspect that while with Air
India it must have flown to and
from Heathrow more than once :D

Thanks Dan that’s absolutely brilliant! I'm really pleased you managed to dig up so much information, please say thanks to Ralph too. It's a very impressive job.

What an interesting career she had! 18 years of service B-) The drug smuggling made me smile and that grafting job is an amazing feat of engineering. It makes such a difference having this sort of information, it gives this Connie some reall character :) Much appreciate you taking the time to do this Dan.

Cheers,

Terry

It's really quite illustrative of the Constellation's
descent from Glory to Ignomy over its history.....

From Flagship of Air India's fleet to incarceration
for drug activity.....

Sic transit Gloria Mundi!

It's almost like reading about a person rather than an aircraft. It's a fascinating read :)

Nieuport 11 flown by Lt Paul Tarascon, Escadrille N62, summer 1916.
Despite having lost a foot in a flying accident before the war Tarascon became an Ace being credited with 12 victories and 10 probables. He was nicknamed the the Ace with the wooden leg. He survived the war and was active with the French Resistance during World War 2.
Tarascon died in 1977.
