Hackers 'destroy' flight sim site

Flight simulator site Avsim has been "destroyed" by malicious hackers.

I just don't understand some people's mentality

What drives these people What do they feel they've achieved Don't even begin to understand

They love the 'challenge' then love the bragging on their various sites

Even little old us are 'probed' about 3 times a week for ways into the server or holes in the coding of the site. They so far have never succeeded. These are usually automated. Once they find a way in, its up the the human to decide what they do and how much havoc they create.

What does shock me though is these 2 quotes

the owners had not established an external backup system.

"Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers.

"The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation."

Shocking. Especially if BOTH servers were configured identically, once they hacked one, they only had to repeat the process for the other
