Nimrod replacement in RAF news

Postby Sploosher » Fri Jan 28, 2011 10:17 pm

I know the article says it is going to replace the R1, but do you think it will replace all Nimrods.

Who would have thought we could scrap an aircraft and then go adventuring with the good ole US of A?
Unheard of, surely.

We've been going to have Rivet Joint for a while, there was one at Waddington last year - I thought they called it something different now...

As Pam says, we've had options on RIVET JOINT for ages!

Well I have a different view - whilst not totally happy about dumping the capability I believe dumping the a/c is the right thing to do

This article makes interesting reading..

I think that puts it in to perspective, TOO LATE, TOO EXPENSIVE and the WRONG AIRFRAME! :ymapplause:

Interesting reading. I only wanted to keep the Nimrod BECAUSE I liked that we had a flying "Comet" :)

I don't have a problem with it either. Why does just about everything in this country run over time and vastly over budget. If something is/was the wrong this, that and the other it could NEVER have been right in the first place and there is my problem. What a complete waste of time and money. If, at it's conception (not just Nimrod) anyone said Oh no, that's not right they would have stopped it before it started? I thought not. But it was right at it's inception, right?

Nimrod is just ONE instance of many and at this particular time (financially f*cked etc) really makes me livid X(
THAT is where my shafted comment came from.

It appears to be an unfortunate fact that the aviation industry world wide dictates when you can have it, and how much it will cost - In this day and age I find that incredible but suspect it's far too late in the day to change things.....

I've never been involved with MoD purchasing of aircraft, but I was familiar with their approach to buying marine engines. When told they had to decide on option one or option two by a certain date, you could guarantee that they would not only be late, but the decision would be that they wanted both options one and two, regardless of any incompatibility issues, and regardless of the effect on cost and delivery date.

They were a dream from a suppliers point of view, because however tight the original contract price was, there would always be a fortune to be made in redesign and rework.

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Sorry could not resist .This is typical of HMG (short for Heavy Mad Goats) Scrap a perfectly good aircraft that cost a fortune Buy another one at twice the price (when you add in the cost of the one scrapped) .
The next thing that will happen is every aircraft in just about any airforce around the world will have vital bits from every other nation in it Oh that happens already doesn't it.World War 3 will be very interesting then Each side will have to buy bits from the other just to keep flying so they can fight each other WHAT A FARCE.
