Watched it.. and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Martin without the 'goatee' seemed a bit odd to watch ( ;) )

I was lead to believe that 2 fully armed Vulcans were in the air 24/7 - during the Cuba Crisis, as a nuclear umbrella for the potential 'outcome' - if political discussions failed. Was this propaganda/wives tales ?

I stand to be corrected by those that know.... ;)

As said in the programme many aircraft were always ready, fully armed and could be in the air in minutes and at times of increased tension the V force was deployed to many bases to make them harder to hit with a first strike!

Everything I've read suggests they were just(!) at 5 minute readiness. The 'Vulcans, Victors & Cuba' dvd confirms this and goes further in stating that the V-force wasn't even dispersed for fear of how that would be interpreted, so I think it unlikely 2 Vulcans would have been airborne.

Certainly the US had B52's in the air, but then they maintained a constant airborne deterrent anyway.

I've never heard anything to suggest they had 2 airborne. Infact as they could get airborne in less than 2 minutes I don't see the point.

i read somewhere only very recently that NONE of the V-Force was ever airborne, fully bombed-up - that was the Murkin way, whereas we had the very-well-rehearsed QRA instead.

the reason given was really very simple - to scramble the most appropriate Squadrons, even at five minute's readiness, was somewhat quicker that diverting anything that might be airborne, inevitably in the 'wrong' bit of sky!

even dispersal training was usually done without the weapons themselves, due to the horrendous handling requirements of the weapons. the HTP fuels were so corrosive and volatile that it was deemed too high a risk to train with them. there were several accidents in the early years - carrying the weapons DID happen, but not very often

Thanks folks - for all your comprehensive replies/explanations to the 2 Vulcans airborne scenario... :)

I can now write that off as a 'wives tale'. ;) :)

SMs post (2nd paragraph) makes very good sense.

Last night's excellent second episode focussed on the development of our A and H bombs. Lots of previously unseen footage shot during Operation Grapple - nice Valiant action!! :D

Interesting to see nuclear H&S 1950's style... ;)
