I have supported XH558 since she was with the VDF but if someone had said let's get Lusty Lindy flying (for example) I would have been even poorer than I am today!!!

imho the Victor is the most photogenic aircraft ever. The SR71 is awesome but damn near impossible to photograph (well). I like the stories from Nellis and GW1 when a lot of Yanks, who saw the Victor for the first time, couldn't believe that it was over 40 years old..

Don't you just love what the 'Cold War' did for UK military aviation?

I know comparisons are difficult but some of those manoeuvres are outrageous I still believe that when push comes to shove it's the country that can afford to train intensively using lots of live ordnance will out perform it's adversaries ,which means imho that the USA with their vast wealth will pound for pound have the best trained pilots ¬

Dan4th,I don't think that simply being " rich " is the difference,I think it's more the commitment to it's armed forces that sets your country apart from most,the USA has always believed in a strong and well equipped defensive force and is willing to pay for it !

Well, they're coming up for some serious
cuts in their funding, and one problem is
that Congress wants to dictate where the
cuts will be made rather than letting the
various service branches decide themselves.....

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me......

Well that'e the same predicament we have /had in this country,the top brass of all three services don't want any cuts and you have a Parliament that can only see things in terms of savings in the short term,our own defences are a bit of a mess due to the misguided muddling of various politicians and Defence Secretaries .Consider the Harrier,scrapped well before it's time and no immediate replacement,an ongoing fiasco over the F35,the list goes on ! nevertheless I still think when your Congress has pulled apart your services will still be strong, well trained and better equipped than any comparable country !

Sorry mate, got diverted from the Raptor O2 issue by financial cosiderations and pilot training stuff raised by others. Apologies for going off topic.

Friendly fire, no such thing, all the ones that came my way were decidedly unfriendly.

Reference my wee quip about our pilots shooting ability saving costs, thats a spot of very British humour don't you know. Good natured barracking or what I believe you folks in the colonial regions call joshing. Not intended as an insult to the US Armed Forces pilots at all. I have to admit US pilots gunnery is exemplary, they rarely miss what they aim at. However, their identification of enemy from friends has on occasion raised an eyebrow and caused a head or two to duck among their allies .

My dad who fought next to the US Army in N.Africa used to say, "When the Germans fired, we Brits ducked, when we fired the Germans ducked and when the Yanks fired everybody ducked"
