my Swedish mate told me about that only quite recently - i had no idea about the reverse-thrust either. apparently it was one of many features designed to work in conjunction with the Swedes intended use of public roads, in wartime - they could land and back into concealed woodland clearings to be prepared to fly straight out again as required.

Sweden still has a very comprehensive defence strategy, moving valuable assets like aircraft away from easy-to-find airfields into surrounding countryside, using predesignated public roads as runways.

i believe these ideas still constrain things like maximum wingspan - probably one of the reasons why Viggen had oversized canards - minimum wingspan without compromising lift area.

Re - cat launches ...........(keeping vaguely OT )

To use a Cornish expression - 'backalong' as a youngster I was determined I would like to be in a jet that was being catapulted from a carrier - so before we lost all our cat carriers I wrote exactly the same begging letter to - The US President - The Russian President and the UK Prime Minister ( Don't remember who they all were at the time now ) asking if I could be considered as a passenger in a cat launch on one of their carriers.

Guess what - The US Presidents office wrote personally to me explaining that the decision lay with another big wig - and they forwarded my letter to the Chief Of Staff - European Theatre of Operations - and he wrote a personal hand written letter explaining - with regret - why I couldn't - but he sent beautiful photographs - badges - and all manner of interesting stuff which I kept for years.

The Russian Presidents Office wrote back a nice letter in excellent english telling me why I couldn't but thanking me for showing an interest in the Russian Navy etc etc

The UK Prime Minister ...............yes ......... you guessed it ........nothing at all GITS

Never did get a cat launch - but there we are - if you don't ask

Very pretty, an overgrown Gnat perhaps, but oh that NOISE!!!!!!

Not sure the lack of ejection seats says anything about reliability mind you, just a lot about how much extra effort to fly it right was involved from the pilots.........
