I was quite surprised it all worked as well as it did. Although the lack of AAA and dropped during daytime with visual aids did make it somewhat artificial. I suppose you could call it proof of concept - and show what a great mind Barnes Wallis had when he had no computers to design the bomb or high tech balancing for the spinning drum.

I think you'll find the "proof of concept" was completed on 16~17th May 1943.

Aside from the excellent flying, am I the only one who thinks it was a completely pointless programme?

Ermmm NO because I did - it told me nothing that I didn't already know from the Dam Busters film!!

It didn't to my mind prove or disprove anything that wasn't already known - or did I miss that bit? other than Barnes was a man of vision and an excellent engineer.

My phone rang so can one tell me why did the pilot decided to drop the final load below the height he was instructed to?

I don't think they told us. Maybe he wasn't as good as we were told!
And if he didn't do what he was told, maybe if he had done it correct it might not have hit the dam.

Does anyone else suspect that the CHARGE was put in place against the dam wall after the succesful drop? Surely they didn't go to the bother of "INVENTING" a detonation system to cope with all that the "BOMB" had to go through!

Err, I don't suspect that I saw it happen. they lowered a mine into the drink next to the dam wall. they lowered it to the correct depth to emulate the real thing and scarpered to a safe location and detonated it. As per the original experiment in Germany the dam wall was breached.
