Qantas Ground A380

I see 'something' fell off on it's way from Singapore to Sydney - the a/c flight had originated in the UK

Engine cowlings have lots of fasteners!

RR now have ongoing problems with the 900 and 1000 models of the Trent. :-?

unfortunately looks like the same issue as sooty said both engines have had containment failure (the engines are supposed to fail safe and not throw debris out sideways)the trent 1000 failed in the test rig due to lack of oil on one of the bearings hope the failure on the 900 is not the same root cause or its going to be a very big problem,
the A380 has got holes in the wing from parts of the engine

I thought the hole in the wing was caused by being hit by the cowling that came off rather than parts of the engine exploding!

No, it was definitely an uncontained engine failure. The pictures of the bits which landed on the Indonesian island include about 25% of a turbine disc. :(

I know first thing [haven't taken any notice since] they assumed then an uncontained engine failure.

the a380 fleet is being put back into service stating a design fault as the cause when i get back to work i shall find out if by that they mean the rear casing is not strong enough or the oil starvation fault is rearing its ugly head again.

I see they're saying this morning that it was a defect within the engine - as opposed to ingesting FOD etc!!

Singapore Airlines have inspected there fleet and lifted the ban on flying.

Wonder how many carriers are switching their A380 orders to have the alternative Engine Alliance turbofans?!

Not a good advertisment for RR as it stands at the moment - the speculation is just as damaging as their actually culpability being established.

Second Qantas jet in engine scare

A Qantas airline jumbo jet has been forced to return to Singapore because of an engine problem.

The Boeing 747-400 turned back shortly after take-off from Changi Airport, airline officials said.

It comes a day after a Qantas Airbus A380 was forced to make an emergency landing at the same airport after one of its engines exploded.

The maintenance question is not the problem as the engine failure was un-contained which basically means that it could down the airplane and unfortunately it dose indeed look like a similar failure to the Trent 1000 engine as fitted to the dreamliner that was destroyed on the testbed at derby they both have the same core design which would also point to a serious problem.
the engine failure on the 747 was a pratt and whitney engine engine failures although rare are not unknown the biggie with this one was the fact that it was a 'new engine' with very few cycles and the fact that it was not contained within the engine nacelle. hope they find and fix the fault soon.

They are now reporting here that they have "found oil where oil shouldn't be" in three engines. :-?

Rolls Royce shares down again this morning. :(
