I thought it would have been better if they actually tried to replicate the actual mechanism rather than their version.

Don't get too excited they didn't do it 'properly' they just lowered the mine into the water against the dam face and detonated it to prove that what should happen, would happen and it did happen!

Apparently them 'elf and safety people get a bit twitchy about civvie aircraft dropping live ordnance. However, the explosive element was the same size and weight and shape as the 'dummy' one dropped from the DC4.

I was quite surprised it all worked as well as it did. Although the lack of AAA and dropped during daytime with visual aids did make it somewhat artificial. I suppose you could call it proof of concept - and show what a great mind Barnes Wallis had when he had no computers to design the bomb or high tech balancing for the spinning drum.

Also showed that the 'real' mission was amazing - they flew for many hours at ultra low level at night. Not a 5 minute run from the runway to the 'target'. Still a great piece of flying though, eh

I think you'll find the "proof of concept" was completed on 16~17th May 1943.

It was interesting from the point of view that back then consider the technology available as pointed out above but also more significantly the ages of the pilots...........
For this programme we have a pilot of many years experience in the field of low level flying.
He didn't have to develop the techniques and be able to fly as well at night as by day AND deal with the enemy ALL at the same time.

Yes the theory was proved in 1943.

Oh, they didn't have inflatable rafts and sharks in 1943.

Apologies. What I meant was that it proved the current 'mad professor' theory. Also proved that the original raid wasn't a fluke / lucky.

As for being pointless - I would argue that 2hrs was rather long winded and didn't cover it in the sort of depth I would have expected of a 'serious' documentary. But it did prove a point - the brits are certainly eccentric and love a good challenge.

Also, the dam builders are not working on any of my sites hopefully. Shoddy would be one way of describing their methods.
