I use the basic Badger spray, for the fine detail I use crushed pastels. I mix the powder and dry brush. I put my coat of satin varnish on, when it is touch dry I brush in the powder. This helps it adhere. I then put on the final matt coat. Even after the matt coat you can still touch it up with the powder if needed. I must admit though i have been looking on ebay to see if I can upgrade the blower.

Would like more details on the use of pastels - sound intriguing - can you break it down a bit into what you actually do and how??

By the way visited your FLICKR from you sig link and love this photo....

Thanks. The pastels, I bought an Inscribe Pastel colour set from Hobbycraft, there are 48 colours in total. I then use the edge of the modelling knife and scrap the pastel onto a piece of card, makes a powder. For the dark colours I usually mix a black and brown, takes away the starkness of the colour. I then take a paintbrush and clip it down so it spreads the powder more evenly, I have done this to several brushes for differing thicknesses etc. Then basically I brush the powder on. As I said earlier, I do this over a satin coat after the decals are applied and when it is touch dry. If you use gloss the effect doesnt seem to go right. When the kit is completly dry, say overnight, I then spray on the matt coat to seal it in.

On vehicles you can make sandust effects etc.

Hope that helps.
