Coventry Wings of Victory Airshow August 1988

Postby Leebee0 » Sun Oct 21, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi All

I hope you find these pictures interesting.
I saw a post on another forum a few months ago around the Wings Of Victory Airshow held at Coventry Airport in the summer of 1988. I had attended this Airshow on the Saturday and although i was only 14 at the time i took my camera along.

As it turned out the weather for the Saturday of the show treated us to clear blue skies. So here are a few of the photos i took that day. Sorry about the quality of these shots i have picked out the best of a bad bunch .

They will also answer a few questions raised in the other forums about this show....

Did an A-10 fly at the show?
Was there an airfield attack?

So to the first pic and the first answer..Yes as you can see from this picture of Pitts special G-WREN an A-10 did attend i would imagine from RAF Bentwaters at this time. This Pitts Special was still about as of 2007 although not in these colours

Image

Oh and here is proof that it actually flew at the show (very poor shot)

Image

Boeing N2S-4 Kaydet N54922. This aircraft was a wing walker right through until Team Guinot in 2010. It had been operated by the US Navy before its Airshow days in the UK.

Image

P-51 A68-192 Mustang Missy Wong from Hong Kong. She had been painted in this colour scheme for the film Empire Of The Sun. This aircraft was painted as Big Beautiful Doll in 2008 and was lost at Flying Legends 2011

Image

Consolidated Catalina G-BLSC this aircraft crashed at Southampton in 1998. The aircraft was recovered and a restoration started. In 2006 the partly restored aircraft was sold and moved to Weston in Ireland.

Seen here with the Avenger having just taken off.

I think these are Harvard's but i can not remember what they were called? I know Gary Numan used to fly with them in the early 1990's.

Image

B-25D Mitchell 'Grumpy' as of 2009 has gone back to the USA in formation with Bell RP-63C Kingcobra this aircraft crashed in france in 1990 and was written off.

Image

T-28C Trojan N2800Q

Image

B-17G Flying Fortress F-AZDX. This aircraft went on to become Pink Lady and is now grounded!.

Image

Scandinavian Historic Flight A-26 Invader 434602 still flying with them today!

Image

Spitfire MH434. At this time painted in Battle of Britain scheme for the LWT TV series "Piece of Cake"

Image

Hispano Buchon G-BOML this aircraft was lost in spain in 1999 and also claimed the life of Mark Hanna.

Image

Finally just to answer the second question yes there was a mock airfield attack carried out!!

Thanks for looking

Cheers

I'm not wild about wing-walkers, but that
Boeing is a sweet aircraft!

Looks like you had a good day of it, Lee :D

The Harvard formation was IIRC The Harvard Formation Team. Gary Numan had his Harvard painted to represent a Zero and revelled in playing the baddie. Although one Harvard doesn't neccessarily do anything for me I really used to enjoy these displays.

Gary Numan had a following of appropriately made up/dressed "Numanites?" They looked a little out of place at an airshow :D
I'd rather be skiing

Great memories Lee - this was the time I was going to alot of airshows and there are some old favourites in your shots. I don't think Numan got enough credit for his flying skills. He actually ended up as one of the top display pilots in the UK before his wife grounded him :p
