Right D4th from the man himself::::::

he's worked out that the total distance 558 could fly for assuming the following:-

240Kts IAS, at 15,000ft [assuming a temperature of -12 degs C with no wind] and with a fuel load of 72,000lbs doing a cruise descent & with minimum landing fuel of 10,000lb left in the tanks

is

2177 nautical miles

& he says I now owe him :(

and Google Earth tells me that, in a straight line, Bangor Airport, Maine is 2,526 nm from RNAS Culdrose, Cornwall (the nearest possible)

558 would need a refuel somewhere :(

SO!

2,177 NM = 2,505.246862 SM (Statute Miles, not Old Shorty...)

That's a Pretty Fur Piece!

Newfoundland reached Easily! Not to mention Moscow and back!

Please give my thanks to DT for his efforts. If you are indeed
"On the Hook" let me know and I'll make it up to you, Pam.........

Hmmmm........That's Also a little over Nine Hours Airborne --

Superb Snacks Required!!!!!!!! ( and a spare pilot...)

Thanks 1,000,000 Your Ladyship!

Dan4th

Addendum: So near but yet so far, eh SM? How many Imperial Gallons
in the removed bomb bay fuel tank, I wonder??????? Or lbs of fuel???????

Ain't I a STINKER???????

Addendum to Addendum: That's also about 28.5 lbs of fuel per Nautical Mile
(or) 210.5 feet per lb. of fuel (or) 13.2 feet per oz.

Now all you have to do is borrow a USN Nuclear Carrier and position it half way across the Atlantic....... :p

Shame it's not Firefox coming out through the arctic, then you could land it on the ice like Clint did........ :ymapplause:

All in all, it may just be easier for you to come to the Vulcan rather than it coming over to you!!!!!!!!! ;)

Sorry, Dave, you Just Don't Get It!!!!!!!

All I ever wanted to know was the possibility,
S***W the Likelyhood........

And you Know I'll be over there making a
nuisance of myself before you know it.....

BUT to USA and Canada easily* with only one
stop, that's a nice thing for me to know.
Handled properly, and in a few years once
every living soul in Britain has seen her twice,
such a trip could make lots of cash regardless
of the expenses involved in doing it. AND her
remaining life isn't measured in air miles but
in Takeoffs and Landings.

Chances are it will never happen, but if it DOES
I know she will make you Proud!

Pin back your lugs!

Military Flight System and Auto-pilot - deleted due to the fact the systems were unsupportable by OEM and cost of using commercial repairers was not practical. (Also what pilot would want to fly it in auto?? :o) ) By the way D4th, the Autopilot was a very complex system and the training for technicians was long and arduous, failure of the exams would earn you a ticket home to civvy street in my day.

Auto-throttle - removed when Pontious was a Pilate.

Artificial Feel - still operational and in use, Elevator and Aileron systems and Artificial Feel Warning Panel are located on starboard wall of bomb bay, Rudder system on rear of port wall.

Auto Mach Trim - fully operational, but in reality will never function because we dont ever reach and exceed its Mach 0.88 cut-in point.

Pitch Dampers - fully functional, but inoperative below 20,000 feet.

Yaw Dampers - fully functional, constant rate from rolling to 200 knots then increases with airspeed.

Finally, D4 th, if our baby ever goes westward beyond our shores, how good would that be :D, I feel fairly sure it would be via Iceland, Greenland and Canada so re-fuel would not be a problem. ;)

A US tour ... I'm liking that idea in principle ............. but realistically - not viable.

Costs - and the sheer logistics of getting Ground staff and Engineers/spares etc... out there - outdo the idea IMO.

Well, what if -- just what if -- Her Majesty's Gummint got
behind the idea with Vulcan as a good-will ambassador to
tour eastern sections of both USA and Canada? Lord knows
she would make a huge smash wherever she went! Your
RAF comes through Bangor three times a year* complete
with VC-10 headed out to training in our southwest deserts.
I wonder how much THAT costs?

Don't forget, I KNOW the chances are slim. All I wanted to
know was how practical it would be -- could 558 actually do
it fairly easily? Looks like it would be doable to me. Expensive,
but doable.

it's a worthy thought - after all, the Reds came your way last year, and it's not as if that was a recruitment drive! =))

the only concern i have Danf, is just how long this concept will be discussed, before your favourite word is mentioned! =))

Ascot from the Old Forum and I were going to
spruce it up and convert it into Tiggers Timeout
Tavern. Patrons would be seated at all times, of
course, and no barmaids because everything had
to be passed to you. No door, just Over The Side!

We never got to do it, though. Very Sad!

And I don't think RUSTY would like it at all!
