558s FI MOD

Postby Mayfly » Sat Oct 17, 2009 4:03 pm

taken from the funding appeal:-

We need to bring forward the next stage of fatigue life extension modifications from winter 2010-11 to this winter; this is because we have experienced a higher than expected fatigue life consumption rate. There are two modifications: strengthening of the front spar bottom boom (Mod 2429), and strengthening of the landing light aperture (Mod 2430).

If I am correct in my beliefs, Mod 2429 was never embodied in service life on any Vulcan & I also think I'm right in saying that they never got as far a drawing up the paperwork for it either [so I'm sure it won't be a 5 minute job as nothing to do with aviation ever is] - so does anyone know how many manhours it will take & what is involved once that paperwork is completed?

I assume [dangerous I know] that part of the aircraft needs to be de-skinned to allow access & who will carry out the work MA or VTST engineers?

My understanding was that the front spar mod required designing, which suggests it's a new modification. Given the £170k price tag, plus additional manpower of £14k for these two elements of work, I would have thought design costs were included.

'Strengthening of the landing light aperture' ?

Does that mean the skin sections being removed from wing undersides ?
