Agree there Pam.

I spent about an hour in the cockpit of XH537 a few weeks back, trying to get my head round all the knobs/switches and dials. How a full crew could operate for hours on end in that environment - is quite astonishing - given the cramped conditions they are all couped up in.

It really brought home what a feat it was to fly non-stop to the Falklands !!!

The amount of cabling - all neatly tied is mind blowing. The fuse boards alone are vast. It was definately warm in there to say the least (thats with the crew access door open) ;) .

I have utter respect for the crews past and present for (to name a few) :

(a) Understanding all the knobs/buttons and switches in the first place.
(b) Steering the darn thing (very limited view ahead)
(c) Not being Claustraphobic
(d) Trying to plot a route foward when you are facing backwards to foward motion
(e) Probably working from an overhead light due to lack of natural light from windows
(f) Cramped conditions... It's not as if they could have a walk to stretch the legs.

yeah its to prevent over stressing the airframe - as the name indicates it gives you a 'feel' - a resistance if you will. [thats my interpretation anyway] assuming thats what the problem is

My understanding of the AFU is that it makes the power controls like the elevators seem stiffer and more resistant to the pilot, as the aircraft's speed increases (obviously the air flow does this naturally for the the normal controls). If there is no AFU, or it is broken, then the pilot has no way of knowing how much the airframe is being stressed.

Out of interest, the bloke who designed this particular gismo is Bill Stableford, one of the designers at A V Roe, sadly he passed away earlier this year :(

I wonder what has broken? It might be something like a control wire which connects the AFU to the control surface, or it might be the spring device itself :(

Hopefully someone who is a tad more knowledgable will be along soon to let us all know!

The artificial feel system does indeed stop the airframe being over stressed, it limits the amount of movement on the control surfaces while still allowing the joystic to be moved over its full range of movement, the aircraft needs less control surface movment at higher speeds to make it pitch and roll at full control deflection at lower speeds.

Regards, David.
