If you really want to get "technical", Vulcans with 301 engines "roar", those with 200 series engines "howl". The difference is all to do with intake geometry and air flow rates. They all roar from the jet pipes, but on the 200 series you can also hear the howl from the intakes.

XM655 has 301s, XH558 and XL426 have 200 series.

XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

All your internal organs rattle about inside your rib cage when a couple of engines are at max chat with you standing underneath. As DB says its a real belly wobbler.

Personally I can't say that I never noticed any truth ;) in this rumour.

Love the way the cameraman pans horizontally the same as he did for the B52, then realises that the Vulcan has taken off from a much shorter run. :D :D

What's the realistic likelyhood that this one gets airbourne too?

Absolutely no chance at all. There is no practical way the airframe could be brought back to a condition the CAA would consider airworthy, and there are NO airworthy Olympus 301s anywhere in the world.

And there is no way 655 would ever do a "Teasin' Tina", because she is always taxied by competent and responsible aircrew.

And the final nail in the 655 return to flight campaign's coffin is that even if she could by some miracle be classed as airworthy, Wellesbourne's runway isn't long enough.

As sooty says the CAA would not allow it but 655 would get off from Wellesbourne's runway with a light fuel load and the engines turned up to 100 % power. It would be a one chance take off with no safety margine so it WILL NEVER HAPPEN. :(

Sad stuff indeed, so we're basically only going to get XH558 then.

I'm afraid that's for sure. :(

With the best will in the world, a museum quality Vulcan plus unlimited hours of skill and enthusiasm still only adds up to a museum quality Vulcan, and investing in a Haynes manual isn't going to change that. :))

I am sure it will have posted before but this was an iconic Vulcan moment for me to see this extraordinary giant being barrel-rolled on take-off by Roly Falk. The film quality is poor but I remember as if it were yesterday. :D :D
