Vulcan Identification

Postby Minty4371 » Tue Nov 20, 2012 6:33 pm

2 photographs of a Vulcan displaying at the 1975 Abbotsford Airshow in Canada. Taken by Richard Courage. He doesn't know what the number of the Vulcan is, so any information will be grateful.

Can't have been XL390 because the aircraft in that shot has 201's (longer tapered jet cap ends) and XL384 through to XL390 were retro fitted with 301 series in the 60's.

This picture confirms that http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/photo/675013.html :D

This is my bet: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16176508@N07/8203967333/in/photostream and if you look very closely at the olive drab camo lines it matches but the roundel has a white dot in the centre and so does XL392 shown here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16176508@N07/8203967381/in/photostream/

Photo's taken from The Andy Leitch Collection (http://www.avrovulcan.org.uk/index.html) for demonstration purposes only.

NEXT! Lol

i had it down to XL390 & XL392, now i do believe its 392

the picture of 392 i was using for reference is the one where its on the fire dump at anglesey, the top fin & nose are missing and has 35 squadron markings (which i overlooked it joined in 1982) from 617 as in the unidentified pics above.

390 looks correct in another picture i have and what swung it for me was the fact it crashed displaying in USA in 1978. i never noticed the exhausts..

i wasnt far out though ;)

@ pop rivet.

I was at Valley based at STCAAME, but I dont remember a Vulcan being on the fire dump, I do however remember a Shackleton, unless that was all destroyed before I got there in `84

Pops - you missed that '392 served with 230 OCU from 11 December 1970 and then again after the move to the Scampton Wing from 12 January 1973.
