I'd say the drain cover was an original feature. Looks exactly the same as the ones that are scattered all over Bruntingthorpe

I've looked into it, It sounds like the RAF museum may have them, but it would mean a trip to London to look through their reading room/archives and considering I can count how many times I've been to London on one hand, I can't see it happening

Apparently you can order via the post. If you e-mail research@rafmuseum.org with the airfields you are after they will see if they hold it. According to their website they charge 50p for A3 or 26p for A4. not sure of the postage costs.
Hope they have what your looking for.

Had a nice couple of hours at Hemswell Market today, it meant I could take a few photos.
Didn't get any veg plants though just a couple of sad looking baby tomato plants.

Two things to report.

Firstly I'd like to thank Paul (Cluny) for helping me explore Woodhall again
Two pairs of eyes are much better than one!!


Buildings 20 and 21 which are S.A.A and ground defence stores.



The view over to where dispersals 1,2 and 3 and runway 18 were.





Concrete graveyard we're not sure if it's peri track, runway or just regular road, but there was a lot of it and it had some pretty thick tarmac on it.





The base of the wall of a fusing building, complete with corrugated impressions.

I think is building 8 which is an incendiary store (or bulding 7 - component store), and this

was the entrance to it's compund, a heaped mound/blast wall would have run all the way round it.
You can just about make out the lumps under the brambles.





Then yesterday I had the chance to pass by Fulbeck (purely by chance) so I stopped at the memorial.

Do they still have the small museum room there to Hemswells wartime days Helen?

If they do I didn't find it , I know the static aircraft left in 2005, Thorpe camp visitors centre (Back to Woodhall Spa again ) has their Lightning, XM192.

The tall tower Helen could be a parachute hanging facility, there is one similar at Metheringham tho' that one has recently changed hands and was described as a parachute jump training centre, tho' thats not what the locals say.


Just a reminder Helen - 4-5th May is Metheringham open weekend and there is a free bus tour of some parts of the old airfield you can't normally have access too.

An unexpected day out today, mum's friend asked us to go with her to Swinderby for this antique fair (I didn't even know they had one) and obviously I'm not going to pass that up
So as well as a couple of nice pieces of Jewellery I treated myself too, I also took a few photos where I could.

Pretty sure the rubble on the left is the newer post war tower, and the bigger pile of rubble on the right is the original WW2 tower plus fire tenders shed, signal square e.t.c. Hope I'm wrong, but it certainly looks like it's all gone I couldn't see any buildings in that area (clearly visible on google earth).

And I'm also quite shocked at the lack of memorials. I know about the tree/plaque but I haven't been to it to photograph it, and tucked away at the Village Hall in Witham St Hughs is a memorial bench to 300 and 301 Polish Squadrons and an information board. But it's so out of the way, it's not exactly somewhere the general public would venture.









Unless there are any other unplanned days out, next on my list (finally) is Skellingthorpe in a week and a bit.

The tower might also be a central heating station, if you look at plate 30 on page 28 of this site it is similar, although I am sure I saw an old station we detached to once that was used for parachute training that had a tower to hang and dry the chutes:

I searched for RAF parachute drying buildings in google and if you are still considering publishing there are a lot of web/PDF sites like the one in the link above that could give you some good ideas to document the history through photos you have gathered to date, which as others have said could be a worthwhile venture.

I must admit to being a bit of a ignoramus when it comes to some of the history of the county I was born in and spent a large part of my working life in and now back to living/working here. oh well when I retire and can still get about I might follow your footsteps and see the county as you have photo'd it.
