Reminds me of the time I enquired how to get to QUANTICO whilst in Washington, lots of odd looks from all of the locals who explained that it had to be pronounced kwanico. I had been putting emphasis on the latter part of the word and causing much amusement in so doing!

Yep - its happened to me down here in Cornwall when I first came in 1986.......

CHY - pronounced 'Shy' is the Cornish for house - so there's lots of different CHY words - e.g. Chy An Bre - 'House on the hill' - 'Chy Kensa' - 'First house' .......etc

So in Newlyn I was looking for Chy Woone Hill..... of course I asked a passing local - where is 'Shy Woone Hill' ... after laughing hysterically he pointed me in the direction of 'Choon Hill'...... a local bastardisation of which I knew nothing :ymblushing: :ymblushing: :ymblushing: :ymblushing: :ymblushing: :ymblushing: :ymblushing:

There is also a common surname down here ...'Jose' .... not as you would think 'Hosay' - but pronounced Joe-ss..... very confusing .... and situational it is ....

I just find it weird naming a new town after an existing town but changing its pronunciation - I mean Paris Texas is still Paris as in France ... odd :D

I went to college with a fellow named Jose Davis --
same way of saying it, and now I know where it's
from!

There are several re-pronunciations here in Maine,
and the one that comes to mind is "Vienna", Maine,
pronounced: "Vie (long I) EN-a".

Of course we also have some great Indian names
like Wytopitlock and Kenduskeag and Mooselookmeguntic
and Aroostook and many more! "New" people here
are fun to ridicule/educate.... :D
