I use them regularly to visit my daughter in Italy, last time yesterday evening. I don't have a problem with them at all, the problem lies with people who buy a flight for a fiver and expect the same service as on a normal carrier where you would pay £100+ for the same journey. My return flight this time cost me less than £40 including taxes and booking fee and it makes visiting my daughter and grandson regularly affordable.
The staff are courteous in fact I think they have made an effort to improve their image over the last 2 years or so, sometimes by the end of the day there imght be a bit of litter that they've missed but that is as much down to lazy passengers being aerial litter bugs as the staff not picking it up, - yesterday they spent the last 20 minutes going up and down asking for all rubbish to be put in their bin liners so there was really no excuse for throwing it on the floor.
And yes. they do charge £20 or £30 for a bag in the hold thats why I always take just hand baggage - if you want to carry loads then afraid you should pay for it, not expect somebody else to apy part of it for you as part of a blanket add on , back in February I got diverted to Rimini due to snow and they had coaches there ready to take us to Bologna within the hour so they did as well as anybody would have done in my view and on the trip I sat next to a pilot who had been on the flight to position to BLQ for his sectors and he was expalining that for handling hold baggage they have to hire extra ground crew which all has to be paid for and soetimes there might only be six or 10 bags on the flight so they prefer to charge those with the bags rather than push the price of everybody's flight up. Suits me perfectly, I'm happy to accept that I have to pay if on any occasion I do want to put my bag in the hold.
Yes he is an opportunist with publicity but it works well so why not milk it to his advantage - just good business.
Last xmas my daughter flew home with hubby and 6 ninths of grandson and used BA to Gatwick ( and I had to go there to do the pick up, but until a few days beforehand BA were threatening a strike (and have done so several times this year) at least Ryanair don't seem to have the same union problems so less worry on that front as well.
They do the job, do it cheaply and I find they are always on time or very close to it although they do seem to builsd a bit of slack into their flight times - we were stuck on ground at Stansted for 1/2 due to ATC restrictions when I flew out but still made up most of the time and arrived only 5 minutes late. Last night I arrived 20 minutes early at Stansted, all in all I think they provide an acceptable standard of service for a short haul flight, as XPL says they do what is says on the tin.
