Anyone remember these old work horses ... :) (The days when the RAF had its own Transporters - Andover, Belfast, VC10, Brittania, Argosy and Hercules.... hey ho)

I remember all of those, they were the mainstay of the RAF. Like most things about this country, we lead the world and let it all slip away. Of course, I am much too young to have seen any. :D

I remember visiting RAF Colerne in Wiltshire as a boy as my uncle was a paratroop instructor there and there were row upon row of Handley Page Hastings parked along the peri track all with no tail fin :-o
Apparently there was some inherant instability in the tail and these were all being 'upgraded' to solve the issue. But still another great workhorse of the time.

If I remember rightly they got Fat Alberts very shortly after that and my uncle said he much preferred them as the side exit doors on the Hastings were very dangerous for paratroops - several hitting the tail on exit - the Fat Albert was much safer ;)

all retired (sold to Heavylift) just before the Falklands War - leased back again to ferry supplies to AI :ymapplause:

one still going strong in Oz - the other one has just been scrapped at Southend :(
