preservation of Trident G-ARPO

Postby Sickbag_andy » Tue Jan 12, 2010 7:42 pm

Anybody like Tridents? if so this site is about a project to save and preserve the last complete Hawker Siddeley HS.121 Trident 1C anywhere in the world. This is G-ARPO, based in the north east of England: http://www.savethetrident.org/

Trident is definitely worthy of preservation, being so important historically - Trident was the first civil airliner in the World to be authorised for blind landings in low visibility - it's autopilot was second to none

VC10 was the second type to be allowed to blind-land

and they are both British! :ymapplause:

Yes, he is ( Neil Lomax) .He has been invited to help with the move to the museum after his success with the move of the Trident 3 (G-AWZK?) from Heathrow to Manchester. The project is being led by Tony Jarrett, I've copied a quote from him here: http://superguppy.yuku.com/topic/36 , anazing what they intend to do with just £14k!

they have one of the most significant collections there - historically important exhibits held in perpetuity for the Nation. I've always thought it a good contender for when 558 finally retires :)

do they ever run anything at Wroughton?

i know they used to have airshows there (558's been there :D ) but these days? :-??

Oi!!!! who's hijacked my topic and gone 'off topic' think you had better pay a few quid to the Trident fund as a fine!

Anyway, if 558 doesnt manage to fly again Wroughton is so close to Lyneham she could probably be towed there (agree it would be a good location, no Vulcans in that part of the country).
Right to get roughly back on topic you lot - who's flown in a Trident then?

just trying a nice little fund-raising scam!

I flew on a Trident 3 once ( 'WZD from memory), nice aircraft in and out although I was near the front, dont know how noisy it was at the back end, I was on a BAC 111 near the back and that was noisy!

anyway there is an appeal to raise funds to preserve Trident G-ARPO, see link at top !!!

never flew in one but did crawl all over the SAS trainer they had at LGW - can't recall the registration, but suspect it would have been a Trident 3

sadly scrapped now along with the wing-clipped Comet :(

Just going back to the Trident G-ARPO :p We're off to Belfast next month to take some parts from their Trident 2E G-AVFE, which is in pretty good condition but is likely to be scrapped. Luckily the parts are interchangeable, so can help make G-ARPO a better finished product.

We're also almost set with our hauliers and crane people for the move later this year. To answer the comment about doing it in £14k - Tony, our leader, has been very good at persuading people to donate what we need, or reduce their costs massively. It's very much appreciated - a full list of sponsors are on our website www.savethetrident.org

Cheers

The airshows were the Great Warbirds (Sally B organised) shows after West Malling closed. I helped at those shows and the hangars were open (great collections). They now seem to actively discourage visiting, when I last looked the tours were fairly limited. The policy seems to be we've collected the items but that doesn't mean we actually need to show them to anyone! The runway(s) then were only used infrequently and a FOD plod was required before the shows. I don't know what stae tey are in now.
I'd rather be skiing

Yes Hi all, Belfast will be a very fruitful trip and will enhance Po very much, Also can mention that today i have fixed a deal with airfix who aqre donating 250.00 in cost price of models that we can sell at retail price in the museum shop which should double the donation to 500.00. I am also talking with other lines as well so lets keep fingers crossed ....thankyou airfix

As you have already seen we have made great advances with reducing our costs by getting sponserships etc but we wont be able to do it all on sponsership alone so If anybody wishes to donate to the restoration just go to www.savethetrident.org as it will be very gratefully received. We will need finaces for upholstery of the seats , covers and carpet and also products to be used in anti corrosion let alone the paint for the aircraft and materials. We will still do our best to limit expenditure by getting as much of it sponsered and more can be used for finer detail items.. thankyou to all of you in helping out regards tony
