Scanner Advice

Postby Quincysw » Thu May 06, 2010 7:58 pm

As a beginner I am undecided whether to purchase a Maycom FR-100 or a Uniden UBC 30XLT.
Any advice would be very welcome.

I am sure one of the members who uses similar equipment will offer you some guidance soon!

In the meantime why don't you go to the NEW MEMBERS thread and introduce yourself?

Hi Quincysw I don't use one I'm afraid but have thought about it - so I would be interested in any info gleaned. :)

Uniden do a pretty good rnge of scanners so always a good choice, however, one thing I will ask is what are you hoping to pick up with your scanner?

As niether of those will pick up military freaquencies (225.000-400.00Mhz range).

I have a uniden and it's great for listening to LWP (little white planes) at my local air fields, but I also have a GRE PSR-295 for the big boys ;)

Oh and welcome to the forum too :D

It all depends on what you want it for, if its just for airshows then the type you have mentioned will suffice, however as stated if its military that you wish to listen then you will have to dig a little deeper.

The UNIDEN Bearcat UBC-3500XLT will problably do the job, the price is much greater though, Uniden Bearcat

I had the XL30 for airshows, worked a dream.

I use the Yupiteru MVT-7100,
Yupiteru at Amazon

Yupiteri - Ebay 1

Yupiteri - Ebay 2

Yupiteri - Ebay 3

The Yupiteru is no longer available "As New" have a look at the links on e-bay. Hope it helps. Jim

edit - tidy up the links - SF

Thanks everyone for your advice. At the moment I only require a scanner for airshows etc. but no doubt I will progress to something better at a later stage.

I have now purchased a Uniden UBC 30XLT scanner as a starting point and wondered if anyone had any tips or advice for a pure beginner.

1) read the instructions :D
Not being funny or anything honest :D You just need to learn how to store frequencies that are local to you.

2) find out what your local airports are.

3) http://milscanners.co.uk/
That'll give you some, but you'll only get the 118.000 - 136.000 range :D

http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/in ... d=261.html
Everything else :D

Or just do a google search for what the smaller airfields. Most have websites with frequency information :)

Hope that helps a bit :)

Or if you're anywhere near Lincolnshire I know most of the local frequencies :))
