Engine change for '558

Postby Howslo » Tue Nov 01, 2011 6:18 pm

I see from the latest news bytes that '558 is to have two engines replaced during the winter. Which got me wondering...

Did we ever find out what, if anything was the outcome of the first engine to be changed a couple of years back - the one with excessive particles on the magnetic catch thingies (technical term!)? I seem to remember some investigations were carried out, but don't remember hearing a result.

Smiler has confirmed that the fate of the two 'pulled' engines is in the lap of the gods! Various permissions awaited, although Dr. P did specifically confirm at the Club Members' day that they were waiting on MA / RR to approve a strategy that would see all four spare engines available for use.

The 2008 removal of the engine that was showing a high debris count is now felt to have been a wise precaution, but further monitoring of others seems to indicate that the usage period was insufficient to have allowed the engine to properly settle down and, as indicated above, there is a (yet to be approved) strategy to return it to the airframe.

Thanks Gully. :)

I seem to remember a certain FlipFlopman saying at the time he thought it was too early in the engine's life to do a particle count. :-? Although I fully understand why the reasons for erring on the side of caution.

Most engineering folk on 558 were aghast at the regularity of mag chip checks at the time and it seemed excessive doing such frequent mag chip changes before the engines had even had any time to have a reasonable run-in period.

As an analergy, its a bit like doing an oil change every 50 miles on your new car and being surprised to see crap on the drain plug at each check, then changing the engine before even completing the 500 miles to your first oil change. However, one has to accept that the engineering authority had very little current experience and data to base a decision on and played it safe rather than sorry. In hindsight and with several seasons of data, it may seem to have been overcautious, hopefully the removed engines can ultimately be returned to service and extend the life of 558.

But remember folks, we have always chosen to err on the side of flight safety and will continue to do so I am sure.

Safety and common sense will prevail in that order.
As there is now a database developing, I'm sure that after some thinking, head scratching and looking into the crystal ball is achieved, checking which way the wind is blowing and taking into account of the price of fish. They will return to the airframe.

If not can I borrow one so I can use it to teach propulsion to our air cadets??

No, seriously I'm teaching propulsion this year. Pistons, turbines and rocketry.

Need lots of ideas to spice it up and video too.

Come on gang I know you will rise to the challenge.

Set-off some fireworks and talk
about what makes them GO!

(Skyrockets, Nick...)

Hair dryer and a pinwheel for turbines....

Teen boys tend to like anything that
gets blown-up, so use some fireworks
to destroy some container as a way
to illustrate the Force involved.....

Propulsion, after all, is Controlled
Explosive Force. Explosive Force is
Pressure.

The louder and more destructive the
demonstration, the more lasting and
illustrative will be your session!

There is ,I think, an ex-558 engine at Hinckley which will never be airworthy again. Don't know what the story is, but perhaps if you talk to Colin Marshall, TVOC Logistics Manager, he may be able to help. Contact him through TVOC number at Hinckley.
