Two Army Merlins are at Bootham Hospital York.

One bringing someone in, the other just hovers there (Why do they always come in in twos?)

they are quite often in and out.

they will be from Queen Elizabeth Barracks

No Army operated Merlins I'm afraid, all the green ones are either 28 or 78 Sqn RAF and the ODD grey ones belong to the Wavy Navy!

They were gween and they are in and out often, I presumed they were army as the baracks isn't too far away and it's a military hospital jobby!!!

anyway they fly in pairs one lands and the other hovers. but the air ambulance lands alone so there is no ground threat.

Not at all. The service was colloquially called the "Wavy Navy", after the 3/8-inch wavy sleeve 'rings' that RNVR officers wore to differentiate them from RN/RNR officers. By Command of HM King George VI in 1952, these were replaced by the straight rank lacing used in the full-time RN, with the addition of a small 'R' in the centre of the executive curl on cuff and epaulette insignia. From 30 November 2007, mainly due to increasing involvement of the RNR in RN operations and deployments, the wearing of the distinctive 'R' was discontinued for all other than honorary officers.

There's been lots of Marham Tornado's out and about today so very well could have been a Tornado. One was low level around the Skeggy area about that time, could be him?


I had a really low Herc over the A16 near Swinesheads this lunch time.
Red 5 came to see me when I was at the post office
And Coming home NATO32 (AWACS), Snapshot something?? (Sentinel) and ASCOT 3 something something all doing circuits at Waddington, could see their lights from Bardney

There have been tornado's over here all day as well....

it's been unusually active, but unusually quiet for the tuccanos until an hour ago. they seem to stay away when the fast jets are out.

i wonder if they allocate the runway space just in case?

Training exercise for the olympics

Royal Air Force and Royal Navy aircraft are in operation over the skies of Yorkshire as part of a major training exercise to prepare for this year's Olympic Games.

In the latest familiarisation drill, aimed at ensuring the British Armed Forces play an effective supporting role in the police-led security effort, military pilots will practise their skills and drills over a three-day period.

Codenamed Exercise Taurus Mountain 1, and taking place from 24 to 26 January 2012, it will see fast jet and helicopter pilots put through their paces as they practise operating alongside one another. Other military aircraft will also take part in the exercise in supporting roles.

Nicely spotted Clunes. As someone who doesn't get oop North very often these days - is it usual for the F2/FGR4?s to take off 'dry' and the 'T birds' to take off 'wet' even though it didn't have a back-seater and was carrying the same stores?

The pilots choice I think Ian, when we were up there last year there was a fair mix of wet and dry takeoffs!

Thanks XPL. I used to be really disappointed at Binbrook when a Lightning launched 'dry'..

F3s were wet and F6s dry - or was it the other way round? I think the 'T' birds were always wet???

If they were on 'Q' and there was a Victor nearby then I assume they would always launch 'wet'.

And at Bulbarrow Hill there was a Hawk doing Low level stuff - but of course Im stuck at home and missed it
