11 year old goes on holiday

An 11 year old lad got himself on to a Jet 2 flight and half way to Rome without a ticket or boarding pass or his parents....

Whilst not really funny I can see how a child could do it rather than an adult. I bet his parents were frantic. So much for airport security in Olympic week!

It happened at Manchester and according to reports he was seen to be hanging around couples with children. Not only did he manage to get half way to Rome but it was passengers who questioned who was with rather than the cabin crew [so it said on the news].

he got all the way to rome! and was returned on the flight back.

I wonder if jet2 will bill his parents?

how much did his parents know? if i lost my child in an airport i would make sure someone did something.

does make you question the security, especially as my 8yr old will carry "my special bag" for me anywhere.

That has got to be the quote of the year.... and was done on national tv?

which of these would you see as a security risk?

* persons boarding a plane unchecked
* persons leaving country without passport
* aircrew not noticing said person
* person getting through security checks without appropriate adult

one other thing to consider is, how many 11yr olds do you know that do not have mobile phones? or carry money or anything metal? therefore the security wasn't working properly unless the child knows airports, which makes it worse really.

at least theres nothing big happening in the country at the moment and we are not on a heightened alert

Going from the lunchtime news here they had gone shopping (presumably in Manchester centre) and the mother did not notice he had absconded legged it disapeared for some time.So how did he get from there to the airport.You have to admit it make the whole airport security thing a bit of a joke.I bet all other airports are frantically checking their's if it happens once who says it won't again .

I heard about it on the radio, but misheard. I thought they said he was 7. Now to an extent, a 7 year old I could understand, as they are probably small enough to blend in with a crowd and perhaps slip through unnoticed. But most 11 year olds I know have the stealth abilities of a heard of elephants!

Interesting report, yes Jet2 have to answer questions on security, however at what stage does the parent call the police to report the child missing. Bear in mind, a three mile walk from the shopping centre, the walk around the airport etc, this could have been hours. I see no times are quoted. I suspect the press are a little economical with the full report. Just highlighting the child on a plane.

I can see how a child could have made it on the aircraft. We have to bear in mind that before he boarded the plane, he went through passport control, the body scanner, the whole job lot, Manchester is very strict on the passport control side of things.

So in fairness, the actually boarding of the plane comes after you have passed all the other security elements there.

Jet2 in my view are the fall guys here when really it should have stopped prior to the child getting to the departure gate.

I agree with you Jim, as always this is not just 1 person/company/bodys fault it's a combination of factors all combining at the same time. As I said in the first post I can see how a child could get through.

I got the impression tho' that the whole of the childs family were at the airport and were looking for him in the airport shops but I may be wrong.

I saw a news item last night, it said the he and mum were at a shopping outlet 3 miles away, he walked to the airport. They were later contacted by the Police of his journey.
