Thunder city lightning update

Postby Ray C » Fri Aug 03, 2012 8:53 pm

Found a web site conversation on Thunder city's aircraft,What a wonderful collection up for auction this autumn.
Surely they will be saved from the dreaded scrapman ? Go to http://www.go-dove.com/event-157941/thun
And get your bids in.

Why has the UK air authorities got such a problem with Lightnings ? If a Hunter or Buccaneer were to fall on your
head it would hurt just the same [-x [-x

Lightning had a dreadful safety record - often running out of fuel.

If The Thunder City jets are up for auction again that's the 3rd time within a year.

Hunter = SIMPLICITY itself!

Lightning and Buccaneer = COMPLEX BEASTS!

Isn't it because they do not have backup hydraulic systems?

There was a saying back in the day that if you wanted to acquire an English Electric Lightning, just buy a field in Lincolnshire.....and wait!

As well as running out of fuel, they were notorious for fires in the vicinity of the jet pipes, particularly caused by hydraulic oil leaks.

50 hours of maintenance on average for one hour flying time.

Complex is an understatement.......

I think the CAA stance is a very sensible one.

It was an acre Ram not a field ,so if the UK is right to keep them out of the air, how come the litigation MAD states is ok with Lightnings ? (rebuilding a twin seater for flight) With today's Expierience and money (all important) I would love to see them fly over my house breaking the wife's greenhouse glass. :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

The CAA would let you operate one so long as you met all the requirements to do so, meeting those requirements is nigh in impossible, not because the CAA are Mardy gits but because as stated Lightnings are dangerous.

Apart from the above there's the issue of engines, parts, suitable airframes and owners who actually want to fly them. It's not going to happen so let it go and move on :D

So, buy a field and collect several of them then - same thing, only bigger!

I see that the Anglo American Lightning Organisation website was last updated in May 2010; does this mean that progress in that project has stalled I wonder?

I really feel I have to defend the CAA 'Mardy gits' comment.

The dealings I have been witness too and the guys I know who work for them are very much on side with classic aviation but the don't let their hearts rule their heads.
Those who normally complain are the ones who don't understand aviation and want to see a/c flying at the expense of safety and regardless of the fitness of the a/c or the fitness of the organisation who wish to operate said a/c.

Edited because I'm a bit backward!!!

Modern classics like my 1988 MR2 Mk1 T Bar make ya whoop with delight at the way a mid engine car can kick ass against modern hyper hatch crap, lovely. Try a Honda S2000 and listen to the lovely howl or a 2 litre revving at 9000 rpm doing 5 secs to 60 mph or tootle along in the VTEC zone to the super market, souless?? Au contraire mon brave. :D
