I suggest turning down the volume for the second part (PA474) as all there is is wind and it gets louder, you have been warned :D.

"Lancaster NX611 Just Jane

Just Jane" was built by Austin Motors at Longbridge near Birmingham, in April 1945. Given the serial number NX611, she was one of the first 150 B Mk VII Avro Lancasters destined as part of the RAF's Tiger Force in the Far East. However, Japan's early surrender meant these aircraft were suddenly surplus to requirements and, instead of seeing service, NX611 ended up in storage at Llandow. There she stayed until 1952. From then on, a chequered career followed.

In September 1983, NX611 was finally purchased by Fred and Harold and, four years later, after completing an agreed total of ten years gate guardian at RAF Scampton, she was brought to East Kirkby, courtesy of the RAF.
It was sixteen years since Fred had seen her at Blackpool auction.

The first moves towards restoring one of her four engines were made in 1993. Two ex RAF engineers were brought in to do the job. They began work on No3 engine. Although it had been idle for 22 years, they were confident they could bring it back to life. Accessing the spare parts was organised, the engine rotated to ensure it would still turn and the cam shaft covers removed. Both had to be replaced, although the engine cylinders were in good working order. Then the propeller was removed, stripped down and examined and - apart from having to adjust the blade settings - everything proved to be in fine order and was rebuilt.
Local contractors were brought in to check the wiring and make good where necessary. That alone was a ten-day job.
The engines starter motor, magnetos, fuel booster pump and ignition harness were removed and checked, the fuel tank was pressurised and the fuel jettison system reset. When the throttle controls between the cockpit lever and the engine were uncovered, it was discovered that almost a third of the small control rods had to be replaced.
However after about seven hundred man hours and at a cost of £7000 the engine was finally ready.
This work was then completed for all four engines and are now at a fully operational taxiing standard.

"City of Lincoln PA474

She was built in Chester in mid-1945 and was earmarked for the ‘Tiger Force’ in the Far East.

The aircraft eventually joined the Battle of Britain Flight in November 1973 prompting the change of the Unit’s name to the ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’. Restoration work on various parts of the aircraft has continued ever since. A mid-upper turret was discovered in Argentina and was brought to Britain aboard HMS HAMPSHIRE and fitted to PA474 in 1975, the same year that the aircraft was adopted by the City of Lincoln. During the winter of 1995/6 PA474 received a brand new main spar, extending her life for the foreseeable future.

After major servicing at Air Atlantique in Coventry during the winter of 2006/07, PA474 wears the markings of EE139, the ’Phantom of the Ruhr’, a ton-up Lancaster that flew her first 30 ops on No 100 Squadron based at Waltham before completing a further 91 ops on No 550 Squadron at North Killingholme. She sports the letters HR-W of ‘The Ton’ on her port side and BQ-B of 550 on her starboard, effectively commemorating the crews of both Squadrons."

So how much work would actually be required to return Just Jane to flight status? I seem to recall reading that she would need to be re-sparred, but what of her other systems would need further renovation? I also see that her engines have been restored to "taxi" standard: presumably they would need additional overhaul work before being deemed flight-safe?

Thanks for posting these films, Helen.

There were rumours that a decision would be made public last October about Just Janes future but nothing was ever heard as far as I'm aware. I think with the remake of B of B there were hopes thats the film co would want to use her & pay for some of the restoration.

She apparently has about 1000 flying hours left on her current spar, as for the rest of it, I have no idea, they (the Pantons) seem to be a bit sick of being asked if she'll fly, when I was at EK in November, two chaps from Australia who hadn't seen JJ since the 60's asked the lady behind the till and she said it was a bit of a sore subject as the website had been hacked into and certain things had been put up there, although I don't know what. So I daren't ask them myself lol :))

I thought it was Peter Jackson's planned remake of "The Dambusters" that was the potential funding source. Didn't realise there were plans to remake B of B too!

nice clip Hihonyr8811 - thanks for that :D

i know I'm not alone in hoping that JJ will fly again - but this new Dambusters film never seems to progress any further than it had a couple of years ago - will it EVER get made???

considering the ability of CGI chaps these days, i think the costs of filming REAL Lancasters would exceed what the boffins with their computers would charge. surely 474 would be filmed, and maybe the Canadian Lanc, but to shell out all that money for JJ...............well i just don't see it somehow :(

Yeah you're right Gully sorry my error

I think it was high hopes SM & not on behalf of the Patons but just general wishful thinking... the last I heard is they were making 16 full scale glassfibre replicas [shell only] but then again there were so many differant hopes/wishful thinking/rumours flying [excuse the pun :)) ] around at one time its best to take it all with a pinch of salt ....

Does JJ ever get to roar down a runway and get her tail up - or is her taxiing all at walking pace like on the YT video??

They have a fast tail up taxi every so often, although not sure I remember them having one last year. I have a feeling it was cancled.

I think the taxi rund are usually bank holidays. They get booked up pretty quickly though and are about £150. I know they have done a tail wheel up at least once before I don't know whether they do it regularly or not.

I have dropped subtle -
thats
S U B T L E
- hints to my daughter and family.....
... sent youtube clips to my daughter and the website addresses - adding nonchalant comments like 'I didn't know they did this' - 'wouldn't it be great' etc etc .... knowing that she might want to DO something for me after the wedding in July - possibly - or maybe not - perhaps I'll just get some Vulcan cufflinks :D

Might even DO it for myself to thank ME for organising the wedding.... ;) :D

ah, but have you done subtle in the same way as women do?

you need to find a tiny picture of JJ in a magazine, which most people wouldn't even notice, put an almost invisible red-biro * next to it with NO other information at all. then take said magazine, hide it under a pile of stuff in the spare bedroom that you never normally go into, leave it there for three weeks (all the while making absolutely NO reference to it at all) - then ask where something completely unrelated is (knowing that it's in the spare bedroom ;) ) - the missus/daughter will know the answer and tell you it's in the spare bedroom. your cunning plan has worked and no further communication is necessary, in fact they will probably have figured it out when it becomes OBVIOUS that the magazine hasn't gone into the recycling box :)

from all that, it will be immediately OBVIOUS to the ladies of the house that you want a fast taxy ride in JJ :D

that's the way they do it, which apparently is immediately obvious to us! why it never dawns on them to simply TELL us what they want............... ~x(

edit........
