Just HURRY UP and catch a cross pond flight so you get to see a FLYING Vulcan this year!

DXP:

If I DO make it over this year, it will be too late
for the Vulcan Effect. I'm test-driving a new med,
and I still have another 55 days to go on the trial.
IF all is well, then they'll let me FLY!!!!

Early indications are really good, but I want to
avoid being TOO sure that all is well. Been down
the Road to Disappointment more than once with
all this....

I've always liked the 707, although it's generally accepted that the DC-8 was a better aircraft and has certainly stood the test of time better :p

the 707, contrary to what some say, didn't kill off the Comet - crashes killed off the Comet! Boeing were well placed to capture an eager market. to quote loosely from a Boeing director at the time, "It's always great to be the first in something, but it usually PAYS to be the second"! ;)

sadly the 707 certainly DID kill off the VC10 - the latter being built to operate from "hot 'n' high" airfield which the 707 couldn't - unfortunately, such airfields simply extended their runways allowing 707s to operate with ease! :((

great clip Danf - all hail the 707! Image

Yeah, I like the DC-8 better, too, BUT
Convair 880/990 puts them BOTH to shame!
What a Hot-rod it was!

Fairy Nuff Danf, but the DC-8 was still more successful - hundreds produced, compared to less than one hundred Convair CV-880s - and many of the former still flying revenue services today!

A VERY OBSCURE QUIZ QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!

What do the Handley Page Victor B.2 and the
Convair 990 (not the 880) have in common?

Metaphysical Cigar to the Winner!

YES MACKRICK! Right you Are!

990 and Victor B.2 were early aircraft to
include this feature which reduces drag,
enhances near-sonic stability and lowers
fuel consumption.

Now all you have to do is explain how the
"carrots" work and who the H**L Kuchemann
was!

German aerodynamicist Dr. Dietrich Küchemann pioneer of the area rule concept a prominent supersonic researcher in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s.

A pod located on the wing trailing edge. They work by trying to minimize spanwise flow rather than reducing drag.

its a similar principle to the Whitcomb area rule.
