Well, for airports that handle commercial
traffic at least, they all have their code
letters, like LHR for Heathrow, LGA for
LaGuardia in New York.....

Those all ought to be on a list somewhere....

Military? I have no idea other than to go
country by country. If there's a list somewhere,
I don't know where to find it....

And for the countless little airports that only
handle the Pipers and Cessnas and Beechcrafts
of the world? WOW!

You can probably get a good figure for airports
with letter codes. Otherwise, GOOD LUCK!

Hope this helps out a little, Marmite....

blimey - I'd guess several hundreds of thousands, possibly even millions, especially if you include all private strips!

Yep - I started the rot - guilty as charged ... :ymblushing:

But I just couldn't get to grips with the sheer magnitude of the question :(

There must be so many different answers ....

I just typed in to Google - always my first port of call - 'How many airports are there in the world?'

Here's just a selection of the 'answers' .............

1) As of 2006, there were approximately 49,000 airports around the world, including 14,858 in the United States alone.
2) 836 international airports (of all sizes)
3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airports By IATA code
4) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airports
5) Go to http://www.airportcitycodes.com/ - there are just over 9000 airports worldwide
6) There are just over 21,000 airports worldwide. It is in the Flight Simulator Handbook. It says that you can take off anywhere in the world now that it has over 21,000 airports. I would add 2 or 3 to the approximate total just so that new airports getting built get counted.
7) There are more than 10,000 airports around the world. Could be in excess of 15,000 including secret military bases.
8) http://www.pilotfriend.com/World%20airf ... fields.htm

So there's 8 starting points and I would think that's just the tip of a VERY big iceberg :p

Varies by year - when was the count taken?
Varies by designation - airPORT - airFIELD etc etc - i.e. there must be over 30 airfields in Cornwall - but only 3 or 4 airports.
Varies by source (i.e. murkins who believe the world stops at San Francisco & New York)
Varies by so many things it would be almost impossible to calculate with any accuracy I would think.

Does that make my first response seem any more accurate =)) =))

The next question in this short series is going to be "How long is a piece of string?"

Should fit in well on here. :)) :))

Who would have thought it - an incorrect pronunciation in murkinland - even though it was named after Calais in France =)) =)) =)) =)) =)) =))

On June 16, 1809, Plantation Number 5 PS was incorporated as Calais after Calais, France, in honor of French assistance during the American Revolution.

Well, that way of saying it isn't
a mispronunciation in MAINE!

If you're here and ask someone
how to get to Cal-AY, after they're
done laughing they'll point eastward
and say "It's about 3,500 miles THAT
way!"

Pronunciation of place names is a very
situational matter, David.....
