Climbing Into Landing Gear

Postby Thumper » Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:49 pm

I just watched Passenger 57 (hey I was desperate for some aviation action) :p

It has to be about the 10th or so film I have seen where someone climbs onto the landing gear of an airliner and gets inside the plane.

Can someone tell me if this is actually possible on an airliner or would they simply get squished?

The plane in this film is a Tristar.

I stand to be corrected, but on some of the larger airliners there is a hatch between the front U/C bay and the forward hold, but the catch is on the inside. And you are quite correct in your assumption that the person in the bay would be "squished", not designed for much more than the gear itself.

Depending on the size of individual and the aircraft type it can be done, however at altitude you will soon freeze to death or die of hypoxia. I wouldn't recommend trying it. ;)

Can't find anyone freezing to death but I did find this in the UK!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/body-of-stowaway-found-after-flight-from-azerbaijan-1143820.html

In 1996, 20-year-old Pardeep Saini survived a 10-hour flight in the wheel bay of an aircraft from India to London when his body went into a coma- like state of hibernation at temperatures that fell to -40C. His brother, Vijay, 19, died during the flight.

Don't know if it's apocryphal or not, but several years ago, a Sainsbury's supermarket was discovering dead indians in their car park.. The supermarket was in West London. The bodies turned up at the same time of day, and the post mortem concluded that they had frozen to death. This puzzled the local plod, until they figured out the supermarket was on the approach to Heathrow, and the bodies' discovery coincided with a daily flight from Delhi to London. They figured that the planes lowered their undercarriage at the same spot, at the same speed. Hey presto - Indian bombs.

I did mention whether it was apocryphal. More than likely is. :) I suppose it could happen, though.
