The bombing of the Prussian Queen pub 1952

Postby Canberra Man » Mon Mar 15, 2010 12:08 am

A crew from 9 Squadron at Binbrook , were detailed for the Donna Nook and Thedlethorpe ranges. On aproaching the range, they picked up what they assumed was the red maker light for the target. They lined up on the marker and let go a stick of 25lb smoke and flash. The light went out and congrats all round. When they got back to Binbrook. it was a different story. The supposed marker light was the red fanlight of the toilet at the Prussian Queen public house at Donna Nook. The pilot Fl/Lt Ted Flavell wrote poem about it. Sung to the tune of Oh dear what can the matter be.

Oh dear what can the matter be.
Three old ladies locked in a lavatory.
Hiding from bombs, Monday to Saturday.
9 Squadron knew they were there.

The first ones name Elizabeth Bonner.
She went away for safety from Donna.
But the bombs that were still fell upon her.
For 9 Squadron knew they were there.

The second ones name was Mary Anne Miles.
She thought she was safe by 4 or 5 miles.
Till down came the bomb which banished her smiles.
For 9 Squadron knew she was there.

The third victims name was Mrs O'Connor.
The two other ladies blamed it upon her.
Bur "Flavell" knew better, upstairs in his bomber.
For he knew the ladies were there.

The stories near over and sorry to say.
That 9 Squdrons aircraft are bombing today.
So the ladies of Saltfleet are moving away
For the Prussian Queens bog is the target they say.
