IA's Flight Simulator Competition - Round 2

Here we go again.

The challenge
- In your Douglas DC-3, takeoff from San Francisco Airport (KSFO)
- Fly towards the Golden Gate bridge (bay side)
- Fly underneath the bridge (SCREENSHOT)
- Continue on a course out to sea
- Land on the USS Kitty Hawk (SCREENSHOT)

The route is indicated here:


The 'flare' displayed whilst flying under the bridge will be judged along with your position on the USS Kitty Hawk upon landing.

Extra merit will be awarded for adverse weather conditions. Although rain/snow maybe visible in screenshots, an extra screenshot to prove wind speed would be required (zoomed picture of cockpit instruments or red text).

Rules
Douglas DC-3 only.
5 attempts allowed (so choose your submissions carefully)
2 screenshots must be submitted (as indicated above)
Video footage is welcomed, but will not give you extra marks (unless your flying skills do the talking)
Crash settings must be ON (you can crash)
It must be daylight
Numbering your attempts will assist the adjudicators critique
Dan4th is again the Judge and Jury (unless he retires while still on top )
Closing date is Friday 6th February 2009 23:59 GMT.

As with the previous round, this competition is all about trust. Play fair people. Fly the whole course, no map jumping

To ensure you can see the carrier, check your scenary graphic settings are at least "medium high".

Tried inverted, but only got this far


Braking distances MUCH reduced with a lesser fuel and payload

Bit of trouble with the Pratt and Witneys at the moment. The guys are working on it and hope to be airborrne latter in the weekend.

May also be a few issues with the 24 hours from bottle to throttle guidance too.

Attempt 1:
Well the P&Ws have been fixed and the bottle has been put down (unfortunately some of it down my gullet) and the challenge taken up.

Lots of inverted practice up at 2000'. This is easy, let’s give it a go. Lined up over Alcatraz, nice and steady. Nose down for a bit of airspeed, flicked her over inverted - lovely. Gentle decent down to about 200', nice and straight and level, lots of nose down trim to keep her out of the water, yes what a pilot I am, this is easy.

It can be done.

Needs full power and full control deflection plus trim. You'll lose height if you try to make any turns though.

My 3rd attempt.
Set weather settings to "Major Thunderstorms", which not only gave me a very slippery deck, but also 18-28kt winds

here's my one and only attempt at the challenge

i used the same weather too - "Major Thunderstorms" - but i also opted to do it at dusk

After being shaken by my excursion outside I thought that it was about time that I put in a full attempt.

Wind 75 degrees at 36kts to simulate carrier steaming in to wind (us paupers don't get moving carriers in FS9).

Decided not to attempt the bridge inverted but chose the short San Fransisco span.



Then a wing over and back through the centre span.



Back over the bay for a gentle turn (only just pulled up in time narrowly avoiding becoming a submariner following the previous wing over ) before coming back for the other short span.



Then off to the carrier for recovery on the angled deck (thought that I was going overboard as I lost sight of the deck near the end ).



Repositioned to the stern and succesfully launched.
