Interesting ATSB updates here.

Interim factual report is due out on 3rd December.

Can they do that?

They bought them from Airbus. Either way not good for RR.

Oh I may have got the RR bit wrong then but they said they have started legal proceedings - I assume to recoup some costs

You may be right I haven't heard the news.

Just looked at BBC website you did hear correct.

Just thought their gripe initially would be with Airbus and then Airbus to RR.

I wonder how many people have cancelled flights on A380s.

Can't find a suitable link, but I heard on the news Qantas said it was a precautionary measure, to allow them to proceed with legal action if they can't settle it amicably.

I don't think RR would want to play hardball and compromise many future years of maintenance and parts profits.

Just guessing but I think this may be an interim measure to alert the lawyers ( on all sides ) re a possible future Products Liability claim, which could also include a 'loss of revenue' item.

The panel of aviation insurers will already be estimating the ( ongoing ) loss.

ATSB have issued a recommendation regarding a specific Trent 900 component.

Excellent ATSB preliminary report here. Warning - it is a 3Mb+ pdf.

Gives lots of detail on the damage to the aircraft and the skill and workload required to get it back on the ground. The guys up front did a superb job. :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

Could you just summarise it for us please? ;)

The short answer to that is No, read it yourself. ;)

I will give you this quote.
They also received an aircraft communications and automatic reporting system (ACARS) message from the aircraft operator that indicated that multiple failure messages had been received by the operator from the aircraft. At the time, the flight crew were busy managing the ECAM messages and procedures and only found time to acknowledge that ACARS message.

I can't help feeling that "only found time to acknowledge" might be a euphemism for something a little more colourful in the original Australian. :)) :))

Just had this sent through to me. First hand account. Seems a good read, if a little long. How nice of the check captain to have his phone on and take pics of the incident.

The ATSB have issued a new update. Looks like only three more engines were affected by the manufacturing defect which is believed to have caused the uncontained failure.
