Gulf War #1 and Desert Pink

Postby MOD » Fri Jan 21, 2011 9:46 pm

It is 20 years ago this week that GW1 kicked off and a variety of aircraft suddenly went PINK.

I have found a few slides of some pink aircraft from Desert Storm #1 and #2.

I'm with you on this AC1.. I don't think that the very amateurish nose art helped either. It was only supposed to be a short term scheme but looking at the TriStar - Perky - it was way too short term. That just has to be the worst paint scheme ever.

It was water based and was really a TRIAL, it served its purpose and had the dual task of camouflage against the desert while in the air and against the concrete while on the ground! ;)

Probably at the same time as my ex wife mate. She thought it was a very SMALL sex toy :-o

Totally agree regarding the colour though.

I can understand the purpose of the pink all over on the ground attack aircraft (Bucc, Tornado, jag e.t.c) where you'd be going at a ridiculous speed at a ridiculous altitude but for the bombers and the tristar why not have a two tone camo, like pink on the top to make it harder to bomb and grey/white on the bottom because there is no point using desert camo in the clouds.

I agree Dave but who thought that it would be a good idea to send it to RIAT Fairford in this state?

I would either have reapplied the Pink emulsion paint or jet-washed it off altogether. ;)

Presumably for ease of application, just throw it on all over and remember that even the BIG JETS don't fly straight and level, they're always wheeling about! :D

Many enthusiasts like to see worked aircraft wearing their TRUE COLOURS, you're just being a SNOB! :p And who would paint an aircraft just for an AIRSHOW? :D
