That would be Heat/Ventilation/Air Conditioning.....

Do they alternate between Baking/Freezing?

What are the provisions for the aircrew?

I woke up at 03:00 the other night with this
question, so I was just wondering.......

Anyway, back to the question...........

The systems work exactly as they always have, with the exception of air ventilated suits. The air conditioning on Vulcans was/is exactly that, i.e. conditioning yes, cooling not much. So, bearing in mind they only fly in the summer at relatively low level, the aircrew will tend to be on the moist side of warm most of the time (hence carrying copious amounts of water to drink and not needing to use the pee-tubes!).

As far as the rest of the air systems are concerned, they can pressurise the cockpit to two different cabin altitudes (but don't need to), they can breath either cabin air, a mixture of oxygen and air or 100% oxygen as individual aircrew members decide. The co-pilot manages all the air systems on a Vulcan - all the controls and switches are on his right hand side panel.

I had been under the (erroneous) impression that
during the restoration, the cockpit seals were old
and deemed too expensive or nigh on to impossible
to replace. This was the explanation at that time
for the altitude restrictions placed on her by the CAA......

Now, I know that pressurization is all tied-into the
HVAC system, so I wondered what might have been
removed or replaced in that area.

So, then, 558's cockpit CAN be pressurized and to
two levels. And they DO carry oxygen.

Does this mean she could (theoretically) be flown
safely above her current altitude limits if need be?

And yes, I know 558's "office" is no luxury accommodation

HVAC system is, as you say, basic at best......

But then, it always HAS been basic.

The cabin pressurisation system is physically capable of being pressurised, however it was decided, during the restoration, that the pressurisation system in 558 was to be permanently wire locked in the vent position so as to continually vent the cabin to atmosphere. This is to prevent the cabin from being pressurised, thereby saving wear and tear on the pressure cabin structure and extending the airframe life.

As for the airconditioning, I believe it was originally designed to cope with keeping things hot at high altitude and is not very efficient at cooling at low level.

The O2 system is still fully functional and serviceable and is used when required during transit.
