Well, despite my earlier post being deleted,
I STILL think that Bovril provided us a great
service regardless of how he actually in reality
accomplished it!

Duct Tape or Otherwise!

Would the person who deleted my post please
PM me and give some sort of explaination.....

I LOVE this aircraft, btw.........

In the logs, no posts deleted since the last spammer Dan4th ... another case of posts going missing?

I know its too early yet, but would one of the MaPS crew update us later on whether 2011 was one of the more successful (attendance or funds) W&W in recent years? Could have been the weather, could have been the new stall layout - but it certainly looked the most popular I've seen in 3 years.

I've had posts 'bumped' before - I think it's when one posts a nanosecond after someone else and your post gets 'blocked'

Thank you for the DVD, which is very good :ymapplause:. I thoroughly enjoyed it :). I got it, along with a XM655 coaster, on Thursday morning.

I have just watched the "Salute The Vulcan" DVD, which includes the 1997 run of XM655. When the engines are started there is a popping noise before they start properly. Does it do this now, or was it just back then as it may have been early days of engine runs. The run was done by Mike Pollitt and David Thomas. Also, why is it from engine 4 to 1 and not 1 to 4 for starting them. Thank you in advance for any reply.

Hi Minty.
You can start the engines in any order really but we like to go from 4-1 but we have done 1-4 for a change now and then. The popping sound is from the polouste air start, back in the old days the aircrew would call for an engine start and the crew chief would signal to the air start operator to run the palouste up from idle (which is about 27000 rpm) to air delivery speed (which is approx 38000 rpm) and if the aircrew were a little slow or the crew chief was a bit quick and the engine air valve was not open or the engine start button had not been pressed then the palouste would surge due to the air being feed to the engine could not reach the starter and therefore had no were to go and the palouste would cough. The aircraft is fitted with an automatic air delivery system but for some reason its a bit unreliable on 655.Our current air start the VW van is quite happy to sit there all day pumping air to the engines and will not surge if the engine air valves are open or not.
I'm sure sooty will explain more.

CC has pretty well covered it. The Palouste has to be electrically connected to the aircraft systems, so that it only tries to deliver air when the engine start valve is open. Otherwise it will surge. Whether the connection was fitted for the 1997 runs I don't know. I was involved in some Palouste test runs a few years ago where we tried to do it by co-ordination over the intercom, and the first attempt wasn't pretty. I have a vid somewhere which I will try to upload later.

The aircrew manual is clear that the engines can be started in any order from an external air source. I suspect that 4-3-2-1 is used as a convention so that everyone not on the intercom will know what to expect next.

The aircrew manual also states that if the remaining engines are to be started by crossfeed, the engine started from the external air source must be No 1 or No 4. However, it doesn't say why, and at the moment I can't find anything in the engine systems to cause that limitation. The only thing I can think of is that it may be something to do with the intake configuration, and starving the engine being started of air, but I'm not convinced.

The only other consideration with selecting which engine to start first might be hydraulic pressure. If it is not possible to charge the brakes using the EHPP for some reason, then it would make sense to start No 1 first, because No 4 doesn't have a hydraulic pump.

I've just asked DT and he says - he say he's a creature of habit so 95% of the time would go 4-3-2-1,

regards the starting of an outboard first he agrees with you Sooty, and says it's because if you start the inboard first it will steal the O2 from the outboard engine.

Thanks, MF. If in doubt, ask the man who really knows. :ymapplause:

Here's the vid of the Palouste test run in 2003. The camera man was about 15~16 and was rather surprised by the compressor surge.

I also have a vid of the subsequent successful test of the Palouste, but it will take a while to edit.
