Dutch Vulcan Documentary:::::::::::

Postby Dan4th » Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:35 am

I originally posted this a little over two
years ago, but I think it bears another
showing. It's a perfect 10-minute bite
on the Vulcan for the uninformed.......

ENJOY!

Well, it's good for everyone, actually........

It's nice to see people we're familiar with
and an aircraft we're familiar with, and
the whole thing is very well-made and
concise.......

It also covers ground we're familiar with,
but I just like the whole way it's presented........

This is what I would show to anyone
who knows little or nothing about
aircraft and who can't figure-out
why I'm nuts about 558.........

Ive posted this over on t'other side too.
I've just watched the video clip of when 558 went to Holland.

In it Barry Masefield is describing his role in the aircraft. He tells of being sat with only the little port hole type window and not having much of a view.
Then he tells that he see's out with his periscope that looks downwards, and also he can look above 558.
Ok how does that work then because ive been in 558s cockpit and 655s and i cant see how that can be? [-x

Mmmmm I think Barry has flown enough to know what he can and can't see... :))

The periscope is mechanically selectable between views from both above and below the fuselage just in front of the nosewheel (lower view) and at the back of the canopy (upper view) - I promise you! The lever to operate the view is the same lever that swivels the selected view left and right a little as well (the lever is to the right of the AEO's seat just below the bench). You obviously haven't been in '655's cockpit with me, because I would have shown you how it worked! That said, when our cockpit canvas cover is on (which it usually is) you only get a view of the inside of the cover from the 'top view'!!

@Ramshornvortex.
Nice to know what an item was I photographed under 558 near the nosewheel
(taken at RAF Waddington airshow 2011)
Image

Upper one is not really visible when viewing from the ground. I have also seen a picture somewhere of the lever under the desk for the periscope. Not allowed in 558 and can't visit 655 as it is too far away :( :(. Have seen 655 on the DVD that was brought out for 655 MaPS :).

Yes, that's the lower periscope window, Minty.

A vertical tube goes from there up to a similar window on top of the fuselage. The periscope eyepiece is stowed in the desk in front of the AEO.

I'll try to find some pictures.

Edit - best I can find at the moment is this drawing from the aircraft servicing manual.

What viewing angle do you get when viewing topside and underside?

Here is an interesting topic from Key Forums from some years ago highlighting the number of other aircraft which were fitted with periscopes.

http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=74874

Ron aka flipflopman, like Eric, has the definitive Vulcan answer.

No need to wait for Sooty to make my periscope all dirty..... :ymdevil:

The answer is wingtip to wingtip (top view) - for the purpose of warning the pilots if the aircraft is creating a condensation trail.

Underside, the limit of the view is undercarriage doors (just). Purposes for underside viewing are:

Checking release of weapons and position of bomb doors (also timing of bomb door travel for establishing status of engine-driven hydraulic pumps on 3 engines)
Checking status of undercarriage and u/c door position
Looking for fire/smoke from bomb bay or engines
Checking for hydraulic leakage (ask Barry!)

A YoofTube video would be pointless Danforth - our periscope internals are very poor, and the view (particularly with undercarriage down - which it does tend to be on '655) is pretty dire....

There is some YoofTube footage available of Victor tanking filming done through their periscope (which is pretty good) - I seem to vaguely recall that Barry is the AEO on that film as well. Difference is that the periscope on Victors (certainly when tanking) was used by one of the two Navs, not the AEO as on the Vulcan.

Here is the top periscope on '655 (viewed from the ground):

The actual bit that you look through is located in the rear table/bench and the AEO simply folds back its cover and raises the eyepiece into its raised position to have a look.
Charles take a picture and post and all will become clear. No pun intended. :))
